Nagy's Neat Night Nabs Narrow Victory at Otterbein for Women's Basketball

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- Wednesday marked the midpoint of a 3-game road stretch to open the 2022 portion of the schedule for John Carroll Women's Basketball. Against a very solid Otterbein team, the Blue Streaks emerged with a win.

In a defensive affair at the Rike Center, the No. 12 Blue Streaks managed a 52-47 victory over the Cardinals.

With the win, steered largely by Olivia Nagy, John Carroll advances to 10-2 overall, 5-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

The Blue Streaks wasted little time in getting to work on offense in the first quarter. John Carroll soared to a 12-0 lead by the 5:45 mark of the opening stanza, ushered by four points apiece by Nagy and Nicole Heffington. JCU held the Cardinals off the board until the midpoint of the first quarter. A balanced attack, with points by six different Blue Streaks, sent JCU into the second quarter with a 21-11 advantage.

Otterbein found its footing in the second stanza, as the Cardinals slimmed the margin to six points at the 7:38 mark of the quarter. Sarah Balfour stretched the advantage to double digits with a 3-pointer at 4:31, but the Cardinals wouldn't go away. Otterbein finished the half on a 9-4 run, placing the score at 32-27 JCU entering the intermission.

Coming out of the locker room, Beth Andrews '15 cooked up a strong defensive gameplan. John Carroll surrendered just four points in the third quarter, though they couldn't build the lead as much as they would have liked. Nagy and Kaelyn Underwood anchored the offense in the paint, but JCU scored just two points outside of the key. Still, John Carroll possessed a 42-31 advantage entering the fourth.

Otterbein began its comeback effort immediately in the fourth, with a 3-pointer in the opening minute and a layup not long after, and a triple at the 6:21 mark to slim the margin to three points. John Carroll finally got its first points with 5:08 left in the fourth, ending an 8-0 run. But then turnovers hindered JCU, allowing the hosts to grab a 45-44 lead with 3:45 to play.

In the final minutes, Nagy and Underwood took over the game. Nagy, the reigning OAC Defensive Player of the Year, tabbed a pair of blocks to ensure Otterbein didn't stretch the lead. An Underwood jumper with 50 seconds left got the lead back in JCU's favor, 46-45. Underwood tallied a pair of free throws, but Otterbein got the points back after a JCU foul with 12 seconds left. In the waning seconds, Nagy and Underwood tallied a pair of free throws apiece to secure a 52-47 conquest.

Nagy's late efforts helped JCU thwart the upset scare. The senior shined with 14 points, 21 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Tonight marked the third time Nagy has eclipsed 20 rebounds in her career, and the second time this season. Nagy becomes one of just 7 players in NCAA Division III this season to carom 20 rebounds in a game twice. Her 13.6 rebounds per game rank now rank 7th in Division III and 1st in the OAC (by 4.2 rebounds). Nagy now advances to seventh in JCU history with 733 career rebounds, surpassing Caitlin Sureck (726, 2006-10). Nagy is also third in NCAA Division III with 3.8 blocks per game.

Kaelyn Underwood also nabbed 14 points, two short of a season-high. Nicole Heffington also hit double digits with 10 points.

John Carroll is back at it on Saturday, completing the road trip at Wilmington.
