Women's Basketball Fires Past Muskingum on Alumnae Day

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- John Carroll Women's Basketball broke a season-best and dominated on Alumnae Day on Saturday.

The Blue Streaks shined bright in a 93-42 win over Muskingum.

Before tipoff, the Blue Streaks recognized senior Olivia Nagy for hitting 1,000 career points in a Blue Streak uniform.

"It feels great to be awarded, and being in front of the alumni makes it even greater. I am happy they came back and we responded with a statement on a very special day," center Olivia Nagy said.

Eager to extend the incredible feat, Nagy put the first points on the board for the Blue Streaks via the free throw line. The Blue Streaks came out hot courtesy of Nagy and Nicole Heffington, who scored a combined nine points in the first three minutes.

Using their height, John Carroll's first quarter resulted in plentiful points in the paint. Forward Kaelyn Underwood was a key factor to these points and she made beautiful back to back layups. At the end of the first quarter, the Blue Streaks led 20-10. John Carroll held the advantage in the paint, both in rebounds, 18-9, and second chance points, 7-0.

The second quarter was defensive for the Blue Streaks. They acquired multiple steals and turnovers. The defense was so strong that they held Muskingum to zero points in the first six minutes of the second quarter. A main way the Blue Streaks acquired points was the and-one opportunities, as the Blue Streaks put 24 points up in the second quarter.

At the half, Blue Streaks acquired a lead of 25 with a score of 44-19. John Carroll's field goal percentage at the half was 41.9%. Olivia Nagy led the team with 10 points and ten different Blue Streaks put points on the board.

Also during the half, over 25 alumni came on the court to be recognized. Head Coach Beth Andrews '15 was excited to see so many familiar faces.

"After talking to the team, I was just so excited to watch this game," said Andrews. "To see all the different women there was truly incredible."

The third quarter started much like the first half, with JCU on the offensive. Heffington hit an early three and a beautiful reverse layup. The third focused on hooks, dimes, and layups. Both teams had beautiful assists and strong defensive plays. After a beautiful and-one made by Jaylen Hoffmann and deep three by Halle Landies to end the third quarter, the score was 76-33 JCU. John Carroll shot 50% from downtown and stayed strong to start the second half.

With five minutes left in the game, the score was 87-38, a 49-lead, making it the team's largest lead of the season. That lead would expand to 53, breaking a season-best for the Blue Streaks.

Heffington led the team in points with 15 and Olivia Nagy and Olivia Giunta both finished with 10 points and a combined 20 boards. Underwood dropped 14 points and a handful of boards as well.

The team will stay home for their next matchup as they will play against OAC rivals Mount Union on January 26 at 7 pm in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
