Nice Efforts by Bouchy, Nagy Steer Women's Basketball over Mount Union in Pink Game

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- It's not easy to win a game in any sport as it is. But to win one with the lead the whole way? And without being tied? Now that's impressive.

And that's exactly what happened on Wednesday night, as WBCA No. 8/D3hoops No. 10 John Carroll Women's Basketball (14-2, 9-1 OAC) defeated Mount Union (6-9, 3-6 OAC) by a score of 77-50 in a wire-to-wire win at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

The victory extends the Blue Streaks' winning streak to seven consecutive games, tied for their longest of the season, and keeps them atop the Ohio Athletic Conference standings.

The Blue and Gold celebrated "Pink Night," honoring those who have battled or are currently battling cancer. Both teams wore warm-up shirts with pink on them, and many of the Blue Streaks wore pink socks to commemorate the celebration.

Early on, the two teams kept the game close, with John Carroll leading 7-4 with just over six minutes remaining in the opening quarter. However, a 9-0 run propelled the Blue Streaks to a 16-4 lead with just over three minutes remaining in the frame. The first quarter would eventually end with the Blue Streaks ahead 20-13.

The Purple Raiders, however, continued to put up a fight. Thanks to a full-court press on defense, Mount Union opened the second quarter with a 7-2 run, cutting the John Carroll lead to two less than 90 seconds into the period. But the Blue Streaks answered with an 8-0 run to take a 30-20 lead with slightly more than six minutes remaining in the first half. Later in the quarter, the Blue and Gold were able to maintain control of a double-digit lead for good, ending the first half with a 15-1 run and a 47-25 lead.

The second half proved to be more of the same, with John Carroll leading by as many as 32 points and as little as 20 points. Many JCU reserves were able log action, as 14 different members of the Blue Streaks played in the game. While the two teams tied the third quarter at 14 apiece, John Carroll outscored the Purple Raiders 16-11 in the final period, as they emerged victorious.

The Blue Streaks were led by a pair of seniors, one of them being Olivia Nagy. She finished with 20 points, 12 rebounds, four assists (tied for a season-high), and a block, all game-highs. Nagy is no stranger to the double-double, with this one being the 36th of her career, 11th of the season, and sixth in the last seven games.

The other senior who led the Blue and Gold was Hannah Bouchy. The Cleveland native tied career-highs with 13 points and a trio of three-pointers, both of which she last achieved in the 2021 OAC Tournament Championship Game.

"I was just looking to attack more," Bouchy said. "Most of my gameplan as a point guard is setting other people up and setting the plays up. But today, I was just seeing the hoop and patterns more often."

Coming into the game, Mount Union ranked second in the OAC in three-pointers attempted. But the John Carroll defense made sure to deny their chances, limiting the Purple Raiders to just 2-of-15 from deep.

"Mount Union thrives off of their threes," Bouchy said. "We were definitely focusing on fading out to shooters and making sure that if they were getting it off, it was a contested shot."

The Blue Streaks also had some solid scoring performances from graduate student Gabrielle Gevaudan (9 points) and senior Sarah Balfour (9 points, 4 rebounds).

Up next, the Blue and Gold will travel to Bexley to take on the Capital Comets on Saturday, January 29 at 2 pm.
