On Cindy Woo Day, JCU Volleyball Stretches the Winning Streak to Double Digits

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — On Saturday afternoon, John Carroll Volleyball hosted Senior Day, celebrating Cindy Woo, the team's lone senior. The Blue Streaks welcomed fellow Ohio Athletic Conference school, Wilmington College.

The Blue Streaks looked to continue their momentum, going into the contest with an impressive 14-3 record and a 9-match winning streak.

The journey wasn't always pretty, but the Blue Streaks got the job done in a 25-22, 25-20, 25-20 conquest.

"This is awesome. I'm so proud of the team," said Woo after the victory. "I'm so happy the team balled out to get a win today."

The first set had solid back and forth momentum, with Wilmington and John Carroll exchanging offensive shifts quite a bit. The Blue Streaks hammered home a plethora of kills to take a prompt 19-12 lead. Wilmington pulled back with six consecutive points before sending a serve out of bounds to make it 20-18. The Blue Streaks soon brought it to game point. The Quakers pulled a few back, but a botched serve would allow JCU to take the first set.

The second set started with John Carroll enjoying a good start, leading 8-3 before the Quakers locked in and took the game to 10-9 in their favor. The majority of the set from this point was very back and forth, with plenty of hard-earned points from long sequences, the largest lead being 4 points from the Blue Streaks on a few occasions. JCU would handle business and take the second set, 25-20.

The third set once again came with an intense upbringing, the game staying close through the first half of it with both teams getting their own arrays of dominance, with John Carroll pulling in more aggressive offense, but met with extreme perseverance from the Quakers. Wilmington's front line held down the fort excellently with plenty of blocks, returning some powerful spikes back to sender.

Wilmington had some time ahead, but John Carroll would maintain composure and take control, turning the game on its head in the dying embers of the set, leading 21-17. They finished the job with a solid finish and ended the third set, 25-20.

Another thunderous showing for the team results in yet another sweep for the team, their ninth of the season and their tenth consecutive win, yet again proving to be a force to be reckoned with.

Cassi Calamunci topped the team with 21 kills, surpassing 20+ kills for the second time in three games while hitting .436. She added 11 digs on the day.

Ally Bartolone tallied a team-high 25 assists, adding a pair of sneaky kills and 8 digs. Lexi MacDonald topped the team with 15 digs, providing 3 aces, as well.

With the win, the Blue Streaks are now at 10 wins in a row, tying for the most since 1996.

The Blue Streaks improve to 15-3 on the season, and will take on Heidelberg University on the road this Wednesday, looking to up the winning streak to 11, which would be the most since 1993.
