John Carroll Takes First Set But Come Up Short Against Otterbein

Westerville, OHAfter a stellar win against Ohio Northern Saturday afternoon the John Carroll Volleyball team dropped a hard fought Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) matchup against Otterbein University, 3-1.

Despite making less errors (18 to 26), the Blue Streaks were unable to contain the offensive surge from the Cardinals.

JCU came roaring out of the gate, carrying the offensive momentum from Saturday's victory, in the first set to take an early lead. The offense totaled 15 kills in the first set, as graduate student Cassi Calamunci and junior Jenn Follmer lead the charge to win the set, 25-17.

Calamunci would go on to total 15 kills and 18 digs.

The tides quickly changed for the next three sets. In the second set, Otterbein jumped out to an early advantage 9-4, but the Blue and Gold battled back cutting the deficit to 17-15 before the Cardinals would win the set 25-20.

The third set was a back and forth affair, with Otterbein leading 17-16 towards the backhalf of the set. John Carroll was unable to slow down the Cardinal attack as Otterbein scored three straight points and won 25-21.

In the fourth and final set John Carroll would not throw the towel in despite being down 18-11. The Blue Streaks, with their back against the wall, scored five-straight points but ultimately lost 25-21.

Along with Calamunci, graduate student Ally Bartolone racked up 19 assists while freshman Kendra Dziubinski held down the fort on defense with three blocks.

John Carroll will look for redemption this Saturday when they travel down to Columbus to take on Capital at 1 pm.
