UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The John Carroll Softball program has a new leader.

The Blue Streaks are bringing in a strong coach with a decade of Division I coaching experience.

Alex Lagesse is the new head coach of John Carroll Softball.

"We're thrilled to welcome Alex to John Carroll," said Senior Director of Athletics Michelle Morgan. "Alex brings great experience and knowledge to the position. We were impressed with her vision during the process. I'm looking forward to watching her develop our student-athletes and program."

Lagesse is a former Division I softball player with 10 years of coaching experience at the Division I level, specializing in pitching.

"I felt a sense of connection right away," said Lagesse. "This is a perfect match for me. The school and the program have so much opportunity. I'm excited to bring fresh ideas to the table. And most importantly, to get to know our student-athletes and develop them not just on the field, but off of it, too."

Most recently, Lagesse served as an assistant coach at Northern Kentucky University. During her two-season stint from 2021-22, the team consistently improved, culminating in two wins in the 2022 Horizon League Tournament.

Before that, Lagesse coached at Providence during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. In 2019, the Friars posted a 30-22 record. For the 2018 season, Lagesse coached at the University of North Florida.

From 2015-18, Lagesse worked under the legendary Carol Hutchins at the University of Michigan. Lagesse learned under the tutelage of Hutchins, a 38-year veteran who accrued 1,684 wins, the most of any coach in University of Michigan history. Additionally, Lagesse worked as an Application Review Specialist at Michigan.

Her coaching career started at Valparaiso University as a graduate assistant from 2013-14. Previously, she played at Valparaiso, leading the program to new heights. Over the course of her career, Lagesse set the program record for career wins and ascended to the top ten in multiple pitching categories. She compiled a 2.37 career ERA and notched the single-season record for wins in 2012. For her efforts, she was named Horizon League Pitcher of the Week six times, honored as an All Horizon League selection twice, and selected to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team three times.

Valparaiso won the 2012 Horizon League Regular Season Championship and Horizon League Tournament Championship, making the NCAA Regionals for the first time in program history.

"Transitioning from Division I to Division III will be exciting," said Lagesse. "I'm especially looking forward to learning the in's and out's of the conference. Much of my background is in pitching and in studying opposing lineups, so I'm looking forward to bringing more scouting elements into practice. I'm passionate about details, and I enjoy collaborating with student-athletes on preparation."

Lagesse assumes the reins of a program with solid talent in place. The Blue Streaks improved from 10-26 in 2021 to 14-15-2 in 2022.

"I want to thank Michelle Morgan and Al Miciak for giving me the opportunity to be the next leader of the program," said Lagesse. "I was thoroughly impressed with the leadership team, both in athletics and across campus. I'm very excited to get started."
