Women's Swimming & Diving Surges to a Home Win over ONU to Open the Season

The Blue Streaks got vengeance for a loss to ONU last season. 
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- On Saturday afternoon, the 2022-23 John Carroll Women's Swimming & Diving kicked off the with a full house in the Johnson Natatorium. With the stands packed and the rail full, the season started with a bang. 

The first half of the meet set the tone for the day with several wins out of the gate.

The Blue Streaks dominated Ohio Northern, avenging last year's defeat with a 229-65 victory today. 

RESULTS

Starting with the 200 Medley Relay, JCU took first place thanks to Maddie Panus, Allie Geletka, Olivia Goodman, and Mairin Dalziel earning a time of 1:52.54. The Blue Streaks also took third in the race with a time of 1:55.43 by Lauren Koppelmann, Rachel Halapchuk, Regan Gunzy and Gwyneth Hamilton

In the longest race of the night, Lauren Spence took first place with a time of 11:44.61 in the 1000 Free. Annamarie Habusta and Maddie Jarosz finished the race close behind with times of 12:20.20 and 12:26.9, respectively. 

Next in the 200 Free, standout freshman Mairin Dalziel took first with a time of 1:58.77. Dalziel was the only swimmer to come in under two minutes in this heat. Mary Hoffman came in second not far behind with a time of 2:05.66. 

After two heats of the 100 Backstroke, freshman Lauren Koppelmann took home the gold with a time of 1:02.05. Junior Audrey Prisby was seconds behind with a time of 1:04.99 to earn her third place. 

Regan Gunzy and Allie Geletka took first and second place respectively in the 100 Breaststroke. A few races later in the 200 Breaststroke, Gunzy took first again with a time of 2:40.50 and freshman Kaitlyn Hilty came in a close second with 2:42.35. 

Olivia Goodman took first in both the 200 and 100 Butterfly, making a name for herself in her collegiate debut. Isabella Genise came in third for the 200 Fly with a time of 2:30.04. 

In the freestyle races, Anna Glass took first in both the 50 and 100 Free races, with two fellow Blue Streaks coming in right behind her, Gwyneth Hamilton in both races and Ashley Lynch in the 100. Mairin Dalziel took first in the 500 Free and contributed to the winning 400 Relay alongside Anna Glass, Mary Hoffman and Gwyneth Hamilton, combining for a time of 3:45.77. 

"Our season started out incredibly well," said Head Coach Tanner Barton. "Both the men and the women teams came out with high energy, and as a result, they swam fast." 

"This was a total team effort. Everyone either swam or dove today and cheered on their teammates. What we did today could not have been done if we didn't come together as one." 

The Blue Streaks will return to action on the road next at Mount Union on November 5.
