Women's Basketball Holds off Gators for Season-Opening Victory

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The John Carroll Women's Basketball Team opened the season tonight with a hard fought 67-64 win over the Allegheny Gators on Friday, November 11.

This marks the 14th season in a row in which the Blue Streaks have started the season 1-0.

The victory completed a successful Day 1 of the Winking Lizard Tip-Off Tournament for John Carroll.

Kaelyn Underwood kicked off the scoring a minute into the contest with a layup to put the Blue Streaks ahead 2-0. The game continued to be played at a break-neck speed in the first quarter, until John Carroll established a 14-10 lead to close out the first quarter. JCU went 6-6 from the charity stripe in the opening frame.

Three steals (Kaelyn Underwood, Jaylen Hoffman, Bella Carciopollo) in the opening three minutes of the second quarter allowed the Blue Streaks to extend their lead to seven. Allegheny's Emily Lauer did her best to keep her team in the first half, posting 13 points, but John Carroll led 38-27 heading into the half.

The Gators adjusted their strategy going into the second half. Lauer and Caldwell drew two early charges defensively, and offensively the team shifted to a long range attack hitting 3-of-5 of their threes in the quarter.

Unfazed, John Carroll posted their most efficient quarter from the field as they shot 6-for-12 and entered the final quarter of play with a 59-46 lead. The lead could have been more comfortable, but Lauer posted her 20th point (her final of the game) with 0:08 left in the quarter.

As the game shifted into the fourth quarter, the Gators defense rose to the occasion. Alleghney forced four turnovers and tallied two blocks, sparking a 14-2 run.

The Blue Streaks, who once possessed a 17-point lead, were hanging on by a thread, ahead by only three points. A steal from each side set up the Blue Streaks in transition to find Halle Landies in the corner for a three to extend the lead 66-60.

The lead was immediately trimmed to four when Alexis Caldwell knocked down a deep two point shot along the baseline. Maddie Piertrowski went 1-for-2 from the line to push the lead to five.

A Kate Leach layup and defensive rebound setup Allegheny with a chance to tie the game with one shot, down 67-64. Leach would create space and hoist a three, but it would have too much muscle, as the Blue Streaks held on for the win.

Landies (13) led the Blue Streaks in points, while her teammate Kaelyn Underwood posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Defensively the Senior also recorded three steals and two blocks.

John Carroll managed an impressive 22-32 from the free throw line while the Gators shot a disappointing 3-for-11.

JCU will be back on the hardwood, tomorrow against Hiram College (0-2) at 2 pm.
