Women's Basketball Ends Skid with Defensive Victory over Conn College

NAPLES, Fla. -- After surviving a travel nightmare that started Tuesday and ended Wednesday morning (due to air travel issues plaguing the country following the pre-Christmas snowstorm), John Carroll Women's Basketball looked resilient in a win on Wednesday evening.

In the first game of the Naples Classic at the Community School of Naples, the Blue Streaks walked away with a win. The Blue & Gold notched a 50-40 conquest of Connecticut College in the neutral contest.

John Carroll advances to 6-4 on the year with the victory, ending a short 3-game losing streak.

Points were at a premium in the opening quarter, as the teams combined for just 18 points. John Carroll did score first, as Halle Landies buried a 3-pointer at the 99 second mark. Fast break buckets by Jaylen Hoffmann and Maddie Pietrowski pushed the lead to 7-0, as the Camels did not find twine until the 4:41 mark of the first period. A Landies layup with 19 seconds left in the quarter set JCU's lead to 11-7 after the first.

Olivia Giunta scored the first points of the second stanza just 35 seconds in, but from there, the Blue Streaks fell cold. The Camels used the JCU dryspell to sneak slowly towards a lead, as the Camels got out in front, 15-13, with 3:07 on the clock. The Blue Streaks awoke from the slumber in the final few minutes of the half, firing out to a 9-2 run down the stretch. A Christina Passerell layup cemented a 22-17 score in favor of JCU at the break.

The third quarter is what won the Blue Streaks the game. John Carroll asserted its dominance on the boards, and it paid off in spades. In the first few minutes of the third, Conn College outscored JCU, 4-2, before the Blue Streaks' defensive prowess and propensity for offensive boards shone through.

The Blue Streaks outscored the Camels in the final seven minutes of the third quarter, 16-3, and thus held a commanding 40-24 lead after three. Six different Blue Streaks found twine, and tallied 7 second chance points. For the game, JCU won that category, 22-5.

John Carroll's lead never dwindled below eight points again. The Camels took to fouling, and got the deficit down to nine points with a couple minutes left, and then again in the waning moments. But while the Blue Streaks were not efficient from the line, timely boards proved critical. For the game, the Blue Streaks outrebounded the Camels by a wide margin, 54-29, with a whopping 22 offensive boards. The 54 rebounds is a season-high for JCU.

Individually, the Blue & Gold spread the wealth on offense. In all, 11 Blue Streaks tallied a point, with Hoffmann the leader and only double-digit scorer with 11 points. Pietrowski nabbed a career-best 11 rebounds and tied a career mark with 5 steals. Carmen Heuker tabbed a season-best 4 assists plus 8 points.

The Blue Streaks will have a day of rest before facing off with Maine Maritime Academy on Friday at 1 pm.
