Landies Hits 2 Free Throws with 0.4 Seconds Left to Steer Women's Basketball Past MMA

NAPLES, Fla. – Halle Landies has ice in her veins.

When John Carroll Women's Basketball needed her, the junior stepped up.

Landies provided a number of clutch plays during Friday's 62-60 win over Maine Maritime Academy, but her best work came with 0.4 seconds left. The Chardon native drew a foul driving to the basket in the final second, hit the two resulting free throws, and earned a victory for the Blue Streaks.

The narrow win on the second day of the D3 Destinations Classic pushes JCU to 7-4 on the year.

The trip to Naples is just what the doctor ordered for the Blue Streaks. Following some stressful post-holiday travel, John Carroll persevered for two wins to head home with some needed momentum.

The opening quarter belonged to John Carroll, but not by much. The Blue Streaks sparred with the Mariners in the early going, as the teams traded buckets. John Carroll was the first team to skate ahead by two possessions, with a Halle Landies 3-pointer setting a 15-11 edge. But just 8 seconds later, the Mariners got a triple of their own.

In the final 2:43 of the quarter, the Blue Streaks found a groove, rolling to a 9-3 run capped off by a late Landies stepback jumper. By quarter's end, #5 led the way for JCU with 11 points.

The second quarter saw the Blue Streaks march ahead by double digits on several occasions, only to have the Mariners battle back. Thanks in part to solid work in the post, John Carroll took a 35-29 lead into the break.

In the opening minute of the third, Maine Maritime burst out to a 6-0 run before the fans could blink, and the game suddenly stood tied at 35-all. But again, there was Landies to provide the spark, hitting a deep shot to push JCU out in front again. MMA stole a 1-point lead at the 6:55 mark, but John Carroll climbed in front again.

The Blue Streaks kept moving ahead by two possessions, only to have the Mariners cut it to one each time. At the end of the third, John Carroll clung to a 48-46 lead.

Olivia Giunta scored on the first possession of the fourth quarter, setting the tone for a back-and-forth stanza. MMA snuck ahead, 51-50, thanks to a deep make. But Jaylen Hoffmann responded with a make of her own from downtown. Buckets then became hard to come by, as the defenses clamped down on open shots. With the Clevelanders ahead by one, 56-55, with 2:01 to play, MMA called a timeout.

The break work, as the Mariners buried a triple to move ahead, 58-56, so the Blue Streaks called a full timeout. With 49 seconds left, Kaylie McKenney hit a cutting layup off a great pass from Maddie Pietrowski to tie the contest. Excellent defense got the ball back to JCU with 37 seconds left. After a timeout, Landies slashed to the bucket with her right hand and got the go-ahead layup with 19 seconds to play. That led to a timeout by MMA. On the ensuing possession, the Mariners drew a foul and hit both shots for a 60-60 tie with 15 seconds remaining. After a JCU timeout, MMA committed a foul with just 0.4 seconds left. Landies hit both, and just like that, JCU snagged a second win in three days.

Landies led the team in scoring, of course, with a career-best 23 points. Olivia Giunta tied a season-high with 12 points. Kaylie McKenney and Ava Ryncarz tied for a team-high 8 rebounds, while Carmen Heuker tabbed a season-best 5 assists.

An edge in rebounds, 54-45, helped out JCU's cause, helping to soften the edge of 8 made 3-pointers for MMA. The Mariners' 16 turnovers also harmed them, though they did enjoy a wide 22-6 margin in fast break points. A nice 24-18 advantage in points in the paint was good to see for JCU.

From here on out, it's all conference games for the Blue Streaks. In the first game of 2023, John Carroll will head to Heidleberg on Wednesday, January 4. It's the first of 14 remaining OAC contests for JCU.
