Hack's Career Night Boosts Men's Lacrosse to Road Win over Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The John Carroll Men's Lacrosse team has proven to be an offensive force this season, as they beat the Wittenberg Tigers on Wednesday, 21-16.

The Blue Streaks came into the matchup against Wittenberg riding an impressive 21-4 victory against the College of Wooster. They looked to continue their success against the North Coast Athletic Conference in their first road game of the 2022 season.

JCU did just that, rolling along with a great road victory.

Attacker Brendan Whitty gave JCU a quick lead, scoring the first goal within the first minute of the contest off an assist from senior midfielder Iann Flynn. Midfielder Kevin Hack would tack on another goal to extend the Blue Streaks to two.

Wittenberg would quickly answer with a goal of their own by senior midfielder Noah Mackin, followed by a goal from freshman midfielder Connor Matthews to make it a 2-2 affair. The first quarter ended with goals from John Carroll's Jared Gorenflo and Cullen Zarek and Wittenberg's Julio Novarini to end the quarter at 5-3 in favor of the Blue Streaks. Zarek would finish the night with two goals on four shots on goal.

Mackin quickly cut the lead down to one with a goal within the first minute of play, but was responded with another goal from JCU's Carter Pavain.

Pavain's goal early inthe second quarter led to an eruption of goals for the rest of the half, as they tacked on six more goals. The Tigers were not able to keep up, only scoring twice after their early goal. The half would end in favor of the Blue Streaks, 12-7.

JCU looked to continue to pile on their lead early in the second half, as Reed Stuhlreyer, Hack and Flynn found the back of the net to make it 15-7. Hack, a Toledo native, ended the contest with five goals on 12 shots. His five goals stood as a career high for the graduate student.

Back-to-back goals from Wittenberg ended the Blue Streaks' hot streak on offense, and it gave the Tigers a momentum boost. Wittenberg would add four more goals to end the quarter, but not with JCU tallying five goals of their own to make the score 20-12.

The fourth quarter kicked off with a Tiger goal from sophomore midfielder Kody Gould and sophomore attacker Holton Boehmer to cut the lead down to six. Gould and Nicholas Langenderfer found twine once again halfway through the fourth, but the Blue Streaks held off the Tigers to complete the victory.

JCU lead in almost all statistical categories, as they led with shots (54-39) and shots on goal (31-24). Hack's five goals was a team-high, followed by senior midfielder Reed Stuhlreyer's three-goal performance.

John Carroll will host Aurora University at Don Shula Stadium on Saturday, March 5 at 1 p.m.
