Softball Splits with Quakers, Dominating Game 1 and Losing via a Walkoff in Game 2

WILMINGTON, Ohio -- After schedule changes galore this week, John Carroll University Softball finally got the chance to play on Sunday.

The Blue Streaks traveled south to play the Wilmington College Fightin' Quakers for an afternoon twinbill.

John Carroll set the tone early in Game 1, roaring on offense for a dominant 16-4 victory in 5 innings. Game 2 took much longer. The Fightin' Quakers won in a marathon walkoff affair, 5-4. In all, the backend of the doubleheader required 12 innings, a total of 3 hours and 15 minutes in real-time.

With the split, the Blue Streaks stand at 9-7-1 overall, 2-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

Game One
John Carroll fired up the bats early and often to race to a conquest in the opening game.

The Blue Streaks got on the board quickly in the first inning of the first game. Gracie Bressoud slapped a 1-out single and scored a couple batters later on a Gabby Hougan single. Wilmington answered quickly, snagging a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.

The visitors snagged the lead back in the top of the second. Bressoud again clipped an important hit, slotting a 2-run single to center for the 3-2 advantage. Wilmington tied the game immediately in the bottom of the second.

A huge top of the third for JCU ensured Wilmington would not tie the game again. Kristen Jesberger opened the frame with a double, Hougan singled, and Mallory Stonebraker walked to load the bases. A Wilmington error and a 2-run Kendall Trunzo single ensured all three would score.

A Wilmington pitching change did not end the damage. Crista Nativio juiced the bases again with a single. A Kasyn Scarantine RBI groundout and an Alyssia Carmichael single soared the score to 9-3, and the Fightin' Quakers finally got out of the jam.

The hosts threatened to return the favor in the bottom of the third. Wilmington loaded the bases, but Danielle Orendi slammed the door shut with a strikeout to end the stanza.

John Carroll kept the bats alive in the fourth. Hougan garnered a hit by pitch, Stonebraker singled, and Serena Paterno walked to load up the bags again. Walks by Trunzo and Scarantine plated two runs and forced Wilmington to turn to the bullpen again. The pitcher swap did no good, as Bressoud swatted a sacrifice fly, and another Wilmington error allowed two unearned runs to score.

When the dust settled, the Blue Streaks carried a 14-3 lead into the bottom of the fourth for Orendi to protect. The Pittsburgh native allowed a run to cross in the fourth, but the 14-4 advantage was plenty. But just in case, the Blue Streaks added more cushion in the top of the fifth. Nativio hit a nifty 2-run single to push the score to 16-4. And there the score stood final.

Bressoud, Hougan, and Nativio all enjoyed multi-hit days. Bressoud, Trunzo, and Carmichael all tallied 3 RBIs, and JCU tabbed 7 walks as a team. In the circle, Orendi earned the win, upping her record to 4-1.

Game Two
The Fightin' Quakers were eager to avoid the sweep, quickly jumping on the Blue Streaks in the backend of the twinbill.

Aided by an error, Wilmington plated three runs in the first, staking out a 3-0 lead that would prove challenging for the Blue Streaks to climb out of.

Brianna Callow found her groove in the circle in the second and third innings, giving space for the bats to warm up. Kristen Jesberger awoke the offense in the fourth with a leadoff single. Mallory Stonebraker reached on an error and Serena Paterno walked to load the bases with no outs. Lexie Genovese clipped an RBI single, but Wilmington staunched the bleeding and prevented further damage.

In the fifth, John Carroll dwindled the deficit to one. Alyssia Carmichael started things with a single, and later came around to score on a Gabby Hougan single followed immediately by a Wilmington error.

But the Fightin' Quakers quickly compensated for it, as an RBI double in the bottom of the frame set the score at 4-2. That way it stood entering the critical top of the seventh, as Callow kept Wilmington at bay in the sixth.

Gracie Bressoud and Carmichael began the top of the seventh with back-to-back singles. Jesberger got one of the two necessary runs with an RBI single to score Bressoud. A Hougan sac fly to center plated Carmichael for the second run to tie the game at 4. Wilmington got the final out, keeping it tied.

Callow stood strong in the seventh, so it would take extras to decide the game.

Trunzo opened the eighth with a double, but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple. Scarantine and Bressoud got singles, but Wilmington prevented any scoring. JCU got two more aboard in the ninth, but again the Clevelanders stranded both.

Meanwhile, Callow could not be touched. The freshman allowed a leadoff single in the ninth and a walk in the 10th, but nothing more.

Gabby Hougan reached second with two outs in the 11th, but could not cross. Callow kept cruising in her half of the inning, ceding a walk but getting a double play shortly thereafter.

After a 1-2-3 JCU top of the 12th, Wilmington at last got the walkoff they were looking for. A 1-out single started it, and a deep double to left center ended it. McKenna Archey's clutch hit granted the Quakers a 5-4 win.

John Carroll's bats tallied 15 hits in the defeat, with Bressoud doing the most damage, going 3-for-5 with 2 walks and an RBI. Hougan, Paterno, Genovese, and Trunzo all tabbed two hits.

Callow accepted the loss, but pitched every single pitch in the marathon affair. She finished with 171 pitches, striking out 8 in 11.1 innings, dropping to 3-3 on the year.

The Blue Streaks will play next on Monday, weather permitting. John Carroll is tentatively slated to host Baldwin Wallace for a 3 and 5 pm doubleheader, commemorating Strike Out Cancer.
