Weekend Wrap for Men's Track & Field: Top 10 Marks Highlight Wild Weekend

| By:
Alex Phillip & Jamie Dailey (pictured here at 2021 Nationals) are #1-2 in D-III in the 10k.
If you're a John Carroll Track & Field aficionado, you've likely become somewhat of a Carmen Sandiego.

As Kyle Basista's program has become a national powerhouse, the Blue Streaks have been traversing the country for top competitions. This weekend was the perfect example.

The JCU Men's Track & Field squad went to Southern California, Bucknell, and Tiffin in an action-packed weekend.

And the travels proved to be worth it. Exiting the weekend, four Blue Streaks can lay claim to top 10 times in the country: Alex Phillip and Jamie Dailey are #1 and #2 in Division III in the 10,000m, Cormac Peppard-Kramer and Ian Pierson are # 6 and #7 in the 3000m Steeplechase, and Pierson is also #10 in the 1500m.
In all, it was a wild weekend for the Blue Streaks.

Mt. Sac Relays (Walnut, CA)

Alex Phillip and Jamie Dailey stole the spotlight once again.

If they weren't already, Phillip and Dailey are now officially the top 1-2 punch distance runners in all of NCAA Division III. The dynamic duo flew around the track at Mt. San Antonio College, located east of Los Angeles in Walnut, California. At the Mt. Sac Relays, the two JCU stars made history.

Phillip and Dailey each shattered the previous school record in the 10,000m, set last year by Phillip. In a huge showing, Phillip clocked in with a dynamite time of 28:48.88. His time ranks him third all time in NCAA Division III history, and places him atop the heap in NCAA D-III, with the fastest 10k time this year.

Dailey dashed to an outstanding time of 29:28.87, as well. The Bay native's time also made history, as Dailey's time ranks 16th all-time in NCAA D-III history. Dailey's time also stands second in NCAA D-III so far this season, bested only to Phillip.

So, yep, you can say that the trip was worth it.

In addition, Ian Pierson deserves plenty of kudos. The stud senior delivered yet again, as he bested his own school record in the 3000m Steeplechase. He dropped another five seconds, crossing the line in 9:07.84. Now, his record wouldn't stand long, as you'll soon find out. But still, it was quite excellent. And as of Saturday morning, he ranks #7 in NCAA D-III in the event.

Bryan Clay Invitational (Azusa, CA)

Ian Pierson made about a 20-minute trip from Walnut to Azusa on Friday. He competed in the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific.

Pierson didn't break a record on late Friday evening, but he did make some national noise. The Columbiana native roared for a time of 3:51.56, which ranks #10 in the country.

Two races in the City of Angels, two national top 10 times for Pierson.

Bucknell Invitational (Lewisburg, PA)

John Carroll's distance runners made the trek to Bucknell on Friday, and it yielded more excellent results.

Cormac Peppard-Kramer one-upped Pierson at Bucknell. The Irishman steered to a school-record time of 9:05.72 in the 3000m Steeplechase. His excellent time places him sixth in NCAA Division III in the event, just one spot above Pierson.

Watch out for Peppard-Kramer, he's ready for his moment on the national stage.

Ethan Domitrovich and Ryan Champa both ran sub-15 minute times in the 5000m for JCU. Domitrovich scored a time of 14:44.57 in impressive fashion. Champa followed in 14:47.33 in his collegiate debut in the event. With the young duo doing the job, JCU now has six men under 14:50 in 2022, with hopefully more to follow.

Freshman Barrett Scheatzle also made a debut appearance, doing so in the 10k. The youngster dashed to a time of 30:46.26, a sign of excellent things to come. Andrew Miner also competed, lending some advice to the young buck. Miner clocked in with a time of 31:38.44.

Tiffin Track Carnival (Tiffin, OH)

The Blue Streaks enjoyed a number of highlights at the Tiffin Track Carnival, hosted by Tiffin and Heidelberg.

The 100m featured one of the best highlights on Friday. Jimmy Kartsonas tallied a huge PR in the event, racing to a 10.74 and dropping from his previous PR of 11.14. He finished sixth in the event. Garrett Clark opened the season well in the event with a mark of 10.75. In 2021, Clark began the year at 10.99, so big things are in store for the star after his seventh-place start. Mark Zahren also deserves kudos, as he was just .05 seconds off his personal best with an 11.04 in the event. Mike Jones (11.90) did log a PR in the event.

Clark (21.81) and Zahren (22.13) also finished in the top eight in the 200m. Associate Head Coach Daniel Tutskey was also proud of several others for PRs: Jimmy Kartsonas (22.34), Corey Minton (23.60), Mike Jones (24.32), and Evan Smith (24.99).

Staying with the sprinters, the 4x100 relay of Doyle, Clark, Zahren and Kartsonas nabbed third with a time of 41.48.

Mick Doyle stayed hot, as he continued his excellent spring. Doyle tabbed a PR in the 400m hurdles, caroming a time of 55.03 in the event. He finished fourth in a strong field. In the 400m, Evan Smith accomplished a PR of his own in 56.42.

Jack Root, Tommy Naiman, and Matt Costanzo legged top 4 times in 4:01 in the 1500m, all finishing within a second of each other as a strong pack.

Caleb Correia and Gabe Ernest each ran well in the 800m. The stars ran respective times of 1:54.17 and 1:54.82, finishing seventh and eighth.

In the field events, Zach Szafarski took part in the shot put, carrying a mark of 13.72m for 13th. Matthew Russo also got a top 15 finish, earning 14th in the discus at 43.84m.

On Saturday, Zach Walsh garnered a top 10 finish in the javelin with a toss of 42.48m for ninth place.
