UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- The next leader of the John Carroll Women's Golf program is a familiar face.

Melissa "Missy" Gedeon has been hired as the next head coach of the JCU Women's Golf team.

Gedeon will begin her role immediately.

"I'm thrilled for this opportunity. I have loved the game of golf for almost 50 years, and I have a great appreciation for John Carroll," said Gedeon. "As a current parent of a JCU student-athlete, I can see my son is getting a quality education. This is a wonderful school, campus community, and program. We have a really young team, a great team culture with special women in the program."

Missy Gedeon joined the JCU Women's Golf coaching staff prior to the 2021-22 campaign. Gedeon served as an assistant to previous head coach, Jeff Camp, Jr. A youthful Blue Streaks squad ended the year on a solid note with a seventh-place effort at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship.

Gedeon has close John Carroll ties, as her son, Grant Gedeon, is a current student-athlete with JCU Baseball. Missy's husband, Carl, also attended Carroll, playing baseball for then-coach Jerry Schweickert.

"We are excited to welcome Missy as our next head coach," said Senior Director of Athletics Michelle Morgan. "Her resume and experience are impressive, in addition to having knowledge of and a familiarity to our program. We're looking forward to watching her continue to develop our student-athletes and the program."

Gedeon's golf track record is expansive, as she's a veteran golfer. The Hudsonite has been competing in golf for nearly 50 years.

Most recently, Gedeon served as the head coach of the women's golf program at Hiram College from 2017-19 before joining the JCU coaching staff in the 2021. She's enjoyed influencing other women to play the game and has provided coaching to her friends since her teenage years when she coaxed her friends to play golf so she would not be the only girl on the course.

Gedeon's playing career has been extraordinary. Gedeon has competed in six United States Golf Association Championships representing northern Ohio and placing in multiple Ohio amateur events. She still competes in many local golf leagues and has recorded six hole-in-ones in her lifetime.

During her college days, Gedeon earned an athletic scholarship to play golf at the University of Michigan. She lettered all four years with the Wolverines. She graduated in 1987 with B.A. in economics.

Gedeon also earned an M.A. in Education from Notre Dame College in 2013 and graduated from Lake Catholic High School in Mentor in 1983 where she played on the boys golf team.

Currently, Gedeon is the Marketing and Compliance Manager at Industrial Surface Sealer, Inc. located in Cleveland. Her company aided in the construction of the Short Family Tennis Center.

Above all, Gedeon is excited to be a mentor and leader for the JCU Women's Golf program.

"I want to thank Michelle Morgan, Katie Hine, and Al Miciak for this opportunity," said Gedeon. "Women of my generation didn't have many opportunities to play golf, since not many women were involved in the sport. I want to give back, because it's the right thing to do. So many people helped me. I'm excited to work on all aspects of the game with our student-athletes, including the short game, to help foster a lifelong love of the sport. We'll continue our traditions, including our spring break trip to Hilton Head, and create many new ones. I can't wait to get to work."
