Neighborhood Duel with NDC Results in Defeat for JCU Volleyball

SOUTH EUCLID – Following a pair of lengthy road trips in recent weeks, John Carroll Volleyball didn't need much gas to get to Tuesday's road affair.

Just a hop, skip, and a jump down the road into South Euclid, the Blue Streaks faced off with Division II Notre Dame College.

The battle of Cedar Road was fiercely fought, but the Falcons prevailed on home turf, 3-0: 25-15, 25-21, and 28-26.

Notre Dame College roared out of the gates in the early going, utilizing strong front line play. The Falcons' hitters formed a nearly indomitable brick wall up front in the opening set, taking away much of JCU's heavy-swinging attack.

The Blue Streaks looked to loft the ball over top of the Falcons' blockers, but Notre Dame College was wise to the tactic, still taking care of business handily in the opening set, 25-15.

John Carroll served to start the second set, and took advantage. Ally Bartolone helped the Blue Streaks get off on a better foot, helping JCU tally the first few points of the set in a rowdy Murphy Gymnasium.

The second stanza proved to be closer, but the game still belonged to the Falcons. The hosts prevailed by a score of 25-21.

The Blue Streaks of Michele Benoit did not go down easily in the third set. Looking to avoid a sweep, the Blue & Gold roared in the third set. John Carroll snuck ahead with a modest 19-17 lead. The hosts came firing back, though, tying things at 22. Benoit sensed momentum turning against JCU and opted for a timeout.

The respite did not help JCU, as the Falcons tallied the next two points. Benoit burned the Blue Streaks' second timeout, looking to extend things. And that JCU did.

A perfectly-timed Cassi Calamunci kill led to the hosts calling for time at 24-23. After the break, the teams fought tooth and nail for every point. In the end, it was the Falcons outlasting the Blue Streaks, as the hosts handed their neighbors a 28-26 loss.

Notre Dame College's height and strength up front won the day. The Falcons finished with a hitting percentage of .226, compared to .197 for the Blue Streaks. Nine blocks by the Falcons proved to be key.

Calamunci's veteran leadership guided the JCU effort up front, as the fifth-year Blue Streak topped the team with 14 kills, hitting double digits for the third time in seven matches. Abigail Kirk also played excellently with 10 kills. Jennifer Follmer tallied 8 kills against just 2 errors for a .316 attack percentage.

Maddie Maziarz enjoyed a nice night with 18 assists, while Ally Bartolone trailed with 15. Lexi MacDonald stood strong against a blistering Falcons' attack, registering a season-high 23 digs. Payton Miozzi tabbed 12 digs and Calamunci logged 10.

With the loss, John Carroll's 5-match winning streak comes to a close. The Blue Streaks now drop to 5-3 on the young season.

John Carroll now looks ahead to a busy weekend, with a pair of matches at Oberlin on Friday and two contests at Wooster on Saturday.
