Volleyball Catches Fire in Pair of Wins over Oberlin & Haverford

OBERLIN, Ohio -- Following two season-opening losses, John Carroll Volleyball has been darn near unbeatable.

The Blue Streaks have now won seven of their last eight matches, as John Carroll conquered two foes on Friday evening on the road.

Michele Benoit's Blue Streaks took a short road trip to Oberlin to face off with the Oberlin Yeowomen and the Haverford Fords. John Carroll experienced little difficulty in dispatching of both foes.

The Blue Streaks defeated Oberlin in straight sets: 25-11, 25-15, 25-20. And then the Blue & Gold repeated the feat, besting Haverford in three sets: 26-24, 25-13, 25-19.

The first set of opening set saw the Blue Streaks take command. The visitors galloped out of the starting gates for a 12-4 lead. Oberlin did manage a tidy 6-0 run, but then JCU roared for a gigantic 9-0 streak. Oberlin managed to break up the jaunt, but the damage was done and John Carroll walked away with a decisive opening win.

The second set vs. Oberlin began closer, as the teams split the first 12 points. But then Jennifer Follmer stepped into the spotlight and silenced her foes with huge kills. The St. Joseph Academy product helped to author a 13-4 run. A late Oberlin run staved off the inevitable for only so long, as a Cassi Calamunci kill provided a period on the set.

Oberlin snuck ahead in the early goings of the third set, with a 9-8 lead. But then Follmer flexed her muscles again, as did Steph Conley, helping JCU tally six straight points. Oberlin narrowed the lead as the set went on, trimming it to 21-19. But this day belonged to the Blue Streaks, as a Conley kill and a Maddie Maziarz ace did the trick for the victory.

Steph Conley topped the team with a career-high 13 kills. Calamunci and Jessica Liddle each contributed six kills, while Calamunci tallied a team-high 14 digs. John Carroll was outstanding at the net with a .305 hitting percentage. Payton Miozzi came up in the clutch, stepping up with 7 kills and 2 aces. Maddie Maziarz clipped 13 assists.

John Carroll picked up where they left off in the second match vs. Haverford. The fifth-years got the ball rolling, as Ally Bartolone corralled a pair of aces and Calamunci netted a pair of kills for a quick 4-0 advantage. JCU moved ahead 9-3 before Haverford stayed in things with a 4-0 run. But then Kenda Dziubinski and Calamunci each chipped in a pair of kills to push JCU ahead 14-8 before the Fords fired back to slim it to 15-14. The teams traded quick runs and then the serve bounced back and forth. With the score at 24-all, Abigail Kirk kicked in a kill and the Fords made an error, allowing JCU to slip away with a 26-24 set one win.

The second set started even, with JCU just ahead at 10-8. Then, the Blue Streaks really came alive, rattling off a 5-0 run. The Fords managed a couple points here and there, but errors were their undoing. The Blue Streaks cruised to a one-sided 25-13 victory.

Bartolone's mean services again allowed JCU to fire ahead early in the third set, 4-0. Errors continued to haunt the Fords, as John Carroll's lead continued to widen, now to 13-5. But Haverford was not done, as the Blue Streaks saw the lead dwindle to two, 16-14. A Calamunci ace and kill turned the momentum. And Steph Conley was present to slam the door shut, hammering home three sets from Maddie Maziarz to send Haverford to match point. The Fords warded off the loss for a couple points before Dziubinski thundered home the winning kill at 25-19.

Calamunci led the way in kills again with 15. Follmer and Liddle each starred with 7 kills apiece. Miozzi played excellently, anchoring the team with 14 digs, while Lexi MacDonald trailed with 11. Bartolone and Maziarz tabbed 18 and 17 assists, respectively.

The wins advance JCU to 7-3 on the year, but there's no rest for the weary. The Blue Streaks head to The College of Wooster's Tournament, doing battle with the Fighting Scots at 11 am and Westminster at 2 pm.
