Men's Soccer Tames Fighting Scots in Road Victory

WOOSTER, Ohio – Following a ferocious contest with #17 Kenyon last Saturday, John Carroll Men's Soccer bounced back on Thursday.

In a road affair at The College of Wooster, the Blue Streaks scored near the end of the first half and held on for a victory after a quick trip south.

With the win, John Carroll advances to 2-1 on the year entering a home contest vs. Carnegie Mellon at Don Shula Stadium on Saturday.

The Blue Streaks revved up the offense in the early going on Wooster's grass pitch. Hayden Haffner put a shot on net in the 6th minute and Nicholas Felician got a shot on goal in the 16th minute. Patrick Koenig kept the pressure up by forcing a Wooster save a couple minutes later.

The Fighting Scots also got some early shots on net, testing Jake Vogrin. But for the third straight game, Vogrin turned in a nice effort and didn't buckle easily.

Dejan Mladenovic got new troops on the field in the 20th minute. The fresh Blue Streaks eventually broke down the Fighting Scots' defense in the 40th minute.

JCU's opportunity started with a Brenden Swann free kick. Wooster thwarted it but JCU crossed the ball towards the net on the ensuing throw-in. That action in the middle critically brought the keeper away from the net. On the right side just outside the box, Carter Esterle quickly found the ball. The savvy senior right-footed a cheeky shot into the lower left corner of the net on a grounder, leaving the keeper no chance on his perfectly placed ball.

Swann's first goal of the year provided a welcome 1-0 lead in the 40th minute. JCU's single-goal margin stood entering the second half.

Felician peppered the Fighting Scots with shots early in the second half, with three on net within the first eight minutes of the frame. Logan Penton also tallied a shot, but Wooster stood strong in keeping their deficit at one.

Wooster got a couple shots in the second half, but it took 25 minutes to tally a shot on net. And Jake Vogrin was ready for it, turning it away to preserve the shutout.

In the 81st minute, John Carroll applied pressure with a corner kick, though Wooster deflected the chance. In the waning minutes, the Blue Streaks possessed the ball well and prevented any dangerous Wooster opportunities.

Vogrin finished with 5 saves. John Carroll tallied 8 shots on goal, four of them coming off the foot of Felician. A total of 22 Blue Streaks saw action in the contest. It was a fairly clean game, with just one yellow card for Wooster and none for John Carroll, and 7 fouls apiece. John Carroll can now claim three straight wins over Wooster (in 2013, 2021, and 2022).

The Blue Streaks now will prep for the Tartans and a 5 pm Saturday showdown at Shula Stadium. John Carroll will be looking for its first win over the Tartans since 2003, as Carnegie Mellon owns an 11-7-5 margin in the overall series (with a 3-0-2 record vs. JCU in the last five matches).
