Shooting Woes Hinder Women's Basketball in Home Loss to Otterbein

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – In the second game of a three-game homestand for John Carroll Women's Basketball, the Blue Streaks struggled to knock down shots.

A cold shooting night led to a 62-48 loss at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center on Wednesday evening to the Otterbein Cardinals.

Both teams moved to 8-6 on the year. John Carroll was coming off a near upset win over Ohio Northern on Saturday, but the Polar Bears were able to pull away. So, JCU has now dropped two Ohio Athletic Conference games in a row, bringing them to 3-4 in OAC play.

The first point on the board for the Blue Streaks had to be earned at the stripe by Ava Ryncarz, the split free throws were in response to a game-opening bucket from Otterbein's Natalie Allen. The OAC's leading three-point shooter, Natalie Galaida, promptly hit a three for the Cardinals to give them a 5-1 lead. From there, it was a back and forth first quarter that saw the Blue Streaks up by a single point.

Both teams looked to build any sort of lead before heading to the locker rooms, but it was the Cardinals who looked poised to do so. They held John Carroll to 1-for-10 from the field to begin the second quarter. Nevertheless, the Blue Streaks were able to stabilize and went into the half only down by two.

The Blue Streaks' shooting woes continued in the third quarter as they shot just 6-of-19. On the other hand, Otterbein's offense was ignited. Head Coach Beth Andrews '15 did exploit a weakness in the Otterbein defense by moving to a smaller lineup, as the Blue Streaks fired to a 6-0 run to force an Otterbein timeout midway through the third. But the Cardinals adjusted, got a couple stops, and tabbed a few triples to regain momentum.

The OAC's top three point shooting team went 3-for-4 from deep in the quarter and shot the ball over 56% to extend their lead to eight heading into the final frame. Not much changed in the fourth quarter, as John Carroll shot right around 14% and the Cardinals closed out their 14 point win.

The Blue Streaks were happy to have Kaelyn Underwood back in the starting lineup. The senior posted a team-high in points with 12. Maddie Pietrowski was close behind with 11. The two Blue Streaks tied with eight rebounds apiece for the JCU high. Kaylie McKenney showed up off the bench on the defensive end of the ball, as she posted four steals in just 11 minutes.

Otterbein was led on both ends of the ball, once again, by Jenna Hoschouer. The redshirt senior dropped 18 points, going 8-for-11 from the field, while leading the team in both blocks (2) and steals (3). Natalie Allen also cracked double digits with a 10 point performance.

John Carroll will stick around University Heights for one more game as the Fightin' Quakers come into town on Saturday, January 14 at 4 pm. The game will be John Carroll's Pink Game to raise awareness for breast cancer.
