Women's Basketball Scuffles in Home Loss to Wilmington

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS The Blue Streaks dropped their third home game in a row on Saturday evening, as Wilmington sent John Carroll Women's Basketball to 8-7.

The Fightin' Quakers took down John Carroll, 66-51. A cold shooting and turnover-ridden night for JCU helped push Wilmington to 10-5 on the season.

John Carroll's 10-game win streak in the series vs. Wilmington ended today.

The game opened with a Brooke Stover layup that was immediately answered on the other end by Kaelyn Underwood in the same fashion. The teams spent the first four minutes exchanging the lead between one another. After that, the Quakers went on a 17-8 run to close out the first quarter to establish a 22-14 lead, though an Ava Ryncarz triple at 2:15 was an encouraging sign.

John Carroll played the next eight and a half defensive minutes perfectly. The Blue Streaks only allowed three points in the quarter until the 1:30 mark. JCU turned defense into offense and went on an 11-0 run to knot the game at 25. From there, Wilmington caught fire with back to back three-pointers from Marisa Seilers and Jada Pohlen and used the momentum from those two shots to head to the locker room on a 10-2 run. The visitors possessed an eight-point lead at the break.

The Blue Streaks would never get the lead below nine in the second half, as they dug themselves a hole by committing 26 turnovers in the game. Wilmington wasn't far behind with 20 of their own. The Blue Streaks had an impressive night at the stripe as well, going 16-for-22. Meanwhile, the Quakers went an uncharacteristic 10-for-18. Wilmington came into the night ranked fifth in Division III in free-throw percentage (77.1%).

Kaelyn Underwood steered the ship tonight, as she finished with 16 points (7-for-13 from the field) and six rebounds. Jaylen Hoffmann also scored 12 points in the losing effort. The dynamic senior duo proved to be the only two Blue Streaks to score more than seven.

Wilmington enjoyed a well-distributed scoring attack. Three players (Jada Pohlen, Cassidy Lovett, and Kennedy Lewis) all finished with 12, while Zahrya added 10 to the score column.

The 3-game homestand is completed now for the women of Beth Andrews '15. The Blue Streaks will make the 25-mile trip across town to Berea on Wednesday, January 18 to take on D3hoops.com's #7 ranked Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets. BW dropped a midweek affair to also-ranked Ohio Northern on Wednesday before roaring past Capital at the Ursprung Gymnasium today.

John Carroll is on a three-loss, three-win, three-loss streak since after Thanksgiving. So perhaps the fortunes are about to favor the Blue Streaks.
