Electric Esper Guides Women's Track & Field in 2023 Indoor Debut

Erica Esper shattered the school mile mark on Friday before shining again Saturday.
GENEVA, Ohio — The spring semester is now in full swing, as is indoor track and field season.

John Carroll Women's Track & Field began the 2023 season as a team at the SPIRE Midwest Open on Saturday with some great results. 

After Erica Esper set a new school record on Friday, no other marks were set for the Blue Streaks, but it was still a great Saturday.

Erica Esper couldn't beat her fresh new mile record set on Friday, but it was close. At YSU, Esper shined to the tune of a record-shattering 5:02.92, busting down Gabriella Kreuz's previous best set in 2014. But the senior did still win the event at SPIRE. The Independence native clocked in at 5:07.34 for the victory. Abby Schroff followed in fifth at 5:10.46.

The freshman also tabbed a nice effort in the 600m, finishing fourth with a time of 1:42.29. 

Sticking with mid-distance, Claire Eberhardt shined. The star crossed the line in 2:18.41 for second. Ellie Kitsmiller snatched fifth (2:23.75), Sydney Wingler debuted at seventh (2:24.99), and Megan Dobos clicked for eighth (2:25.76). 

Jen Massucci proved to be a bright spot, firing up a time of 10:32.49 in the 3k for second. 

Taylor Anthony helmed the sprints, tabbing third in the 60m dash, clocking in at 7.80. Arnold took eighth with a time of 8.20. Anthony later secured fifth in the 200m with a time of 25.84. 

Genevieve Arnold tallied a time of 9.43 for fourth in the 60m hurdles. 

JCU got a good relay performance in the 4x400. Dobos, Eberhardt, Wingler, and Kitsmiller combined for a time of 4:11.68 for fourth. 

Michaela Bryan led the way for JCU in the jumps, notched a mark of 1.55m. Tori Miller tabbed a jump of 4.68m for ninth in the long jump. On a related note, Caroline Beery tallied a jump of 3.45m in the pole vault. 

In the ring, Kelsey Dunn carded fifth in the weight throw (13.84m) and ninth in the shot put (11.09m).
