Women's Swimming & Diving Opens OAC Action with a Win at ONU

ADA, Ohio – The Ohio Athletic Conference opener could not have gone much better for John Carroll Women's Swimming & Diving.

The Blue Streaks dominated Ohio Northern in Ada on Saturday afternoon, in a showcase of JCU's strength and depth.

Tanner Barton's crew won by a wide margin of 203-91.

Results

The opening races set the tone for the visitors. In the 200 Yard Medley Relay, the John Carroll quartet of Lauren Koppelmann, Kyan Snider-Mills, Grace Roberts, and Mairin Dalziel roared for a winning time of 1:53.55. In the first individual race of the day, the Blue Streaks again finished atop the heap. Marina Sneyd flew through the pool in the 1000 Free, besting the competition by nearly nine seconds with a mark of 11:47.91. Hannah Smith and Maddie Jarosz finished third and fourth with times of 11:58.86 and 12:09.05.

Dalziel returned to the pool with zeal in the 200 Free. The Royal Oak, Michigan native dominated, besting the field by about 10 seconds with a time of 1:57.82. Kaitlyn Hilty tabbed second with a mark of 2:07.60. 

JCU dropped its first race of the day in the 100 Backstroke, but Koppelmann, Audrey Prisby, and Annamarie Habusta recouped points with a 2-3-4 finish. The story repeated in the 100 Breaststroke, as Olivia Goodman, Regan Gunzy, and Snider-Mills did the trick with a 2-3-4 effort. 

The Blue Streaks got back to their winning ways in the 200 Butterfly. Roberts fired to a fantastic time of 2:20.90 to win the race with relative ease. More success followed in the 50 Free, with Abby Zablotny (25.42) and Anna Glass (26.44) powering the way for first and second place.

One of the highlights of the day occurred in the 100 Free. Dalziel, Zablotny, and Glass raced for a 1-2-3 sweep. Dalziel topped the trio with a time of 54.03, followed by Zablotny at 56.62 and Glass at 58.60. Another trio swept in the 200 Breast. Gunzy, Snider-Mills, and Hilty pulled it off this time, with times of 2:40.91, 2:42.25, and 2:44.22.

Looking at the diving, the Blue Streaks notched 1-2-3 in the 1 Meter Diving. Annie Meunier won the day with a final score of 219.90. Emily Gelske followed at 145.90, while Sarah Roehrs also scored with a tally of 139.35. In the 3 Meter Diving, Meunier again topped the charts, leading all divers with a score of 185.00. Gelske and Roehrs followed with respective marks of 144.00 and 112.65. 

Grace Roberts bested all swimmers in the 100 Fly. The Dearborn, Michigan native won in a photo finish, touching the wall at 1:01.83 to take the race by a mere 0.10 seconds. Goodman and Maria Armao completed the individual events by earning second and third in the 200 IM. 

JCU got the job done in the 400 Free Relay to complete the day. Dalziel, Zablotny, Roberts, and Smith combined for a time of 3:47.99, winning the race by almost 10 seconds. 

With the OAC win in hand, the Blue Streaks will be back in the pool next weekend. John Carroll will welcome Mount Union to the Johnson Natatorium on Friday, celebrating the Home Opener in a 6 pm meet.
