Volleyball Wins Opening Set before Falling Three Straight to Heidelberg

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The 12-5 Blue Streaks took on the 11-9 Student Princes of Heidelberg on Wednesday. Coming into the match, John Carroll Men's Soccer stood 1-0 in conference play. The Student Princes had been on a 7-match skid after going 10-1 in their first 11 games.

The Blue Streaks saw the team's three-match winning streak came to a close, dropping a 3-1 loss. The final set scores were 25-17, 19-25, 18-25, 17-25.

Set one opened up with Maddie Maziarz serving first, and two kills from Jennifer Follmer gave the Blue Streaks a 5-0 lead.

The Blue Streaks then got out to a 13-6 lead midway through the opening set before Heidelberg took a timeout down, 16-8. John Carroll tacked on three more points to extend the lead to 10 with Jessica Liddle leading the way. Heidelberg showed some fight, clawing back to within seven before the Blue Streaks ended things with a 25-17 opening win.

The Student Princes brought the heat to the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in set two. Starting with a back-and-forth first quarter of the set, Berg went out in front 12-6.

Coach Michele Benoit took a timeout to reset the Blue Streaks, the reset proved more valuable for the Student Princes, as they came out scoring five unanswered points before the Blue Streaks called another timeout, suddenly down 17-6.

Haley Nicholson helped to bring the Blue Streaks back with five points and forced a Heidelberg timeout at 24-19 Student Princes. The short momentum proved too little, as the Student Princes hung on and took set two with a score of 25-19.

The energy was high for set two, as both teams had shown signs of how explosive their respective offenses could be. Heidelberg jumped ahead, putting the first point up on the board, setting the tone early. After the teams stood knotted at seven, the Student Princes took the first significant lead of the set, 12-7.

When Blue Streaks needed something on the board, Jessica Liddle answered. Along with great team play, the Blue Streaks clawed to within five.

A huge kill from Jenn Follmer followed by two points from Nicholson was the spark the Streaks needed. Unfortunately, good play from Berg stopped the momentum and made the final, 25-18.

In set four, with backs against the wall, the Blue Streaks had to come out firing on all cylinders. Berg proved they are a team to reckon with in a battle, setting themselves up, 11-7, in set four.

Natalie Glowe had two big kills to keep Berg from pulling away early. But the Blue Streaks couldn't close the gap entirely late. The Student Princes worked hard late to take the fourth set, 25-17.

For the Blue Streaks, it was Jenn Follmer leading the way with 17 kills. Fellow captain Maddie Maziarcz tallied 25 assists. Lexi MacDonald and Natalie Glowe both recorded 19 digs each to lead the team.

John Carroll will get back in action on Saturday, hosting Marietta College at 1 pm.
