Women's Basketball Breezes Past Asbury to Open Season with a Win

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- In the first game of the season as part of the Winking Lizard Tip-Off Tournament, John Carroll Women's Basketball pulled off a 70-44 win over Asbury (KY).

John Carroll enjoyed a big lead at halftime and cruised past the Eagles for the win. Head Coach Beth Andrews '15 got a chance to play much of the roster in the fun season opener.

The Blue Streaks started the first with a quick mid-range jumper from Ava Ryncarz on the first possession, followed by an Asbury turnover. Ryncarz continued her hot start two minutes into the game when she hit a deep three-ball with the shot clock running down. Early on, the first quarter turned into a defensive matchup, with both teams getting scrappy and trying to gain an advantage in the trenches. Halfway through the quarter, sophomore Bella Carcioppolo gave the Blue Streaks a six-point lead after hitting a quick mid-range jumper, followed by an and-one conversion two possessions later.

Late in the first quarter, Asbury got a few quick buckets off of a few Blue Streak turnovers off of inbound passes. The Blue Streaks would quickly break this trend, as Maddie Pietrowski found herself wide open driving down the lane for an open layup.

At the end of the first quarter, John Carroll led Asbury by a score of 17-15.

John Carroll quickly fired up a run to start the second quarter, pushing the lead to four. Neither team scored until there were four minutes left in the half, when two straight trips to the charity stripe increased the John Carroll lead to six. When both teams once again stalled out offensively, it was Ava Ryncarz who got another momentum push for John Carroll with a deep three-ball from the top of the key.

The Blue Streaks quickly picked up the tempo for the remainder of the half. Ryncarz and Carcioppolo both got easy buckets in transition to put John Carroll up by 12 late in the half. The momentum push, and a great defensive effort that only allowed the Eagles to score 3 points in the second quarter, put the Blue Streaks up 33-18 at halftime. Ava Ryncarz led the scoring for John Carroll with a whopping 12 points.

The second half saw the Blue Streaks start hot, with two quick 3-pointers from Halle Landies on back-to-back possessions to begin the half. From there, both teams would trade a couple of blows, but scrappy play would help the Blue Streaks maintain a 15-point lead late in the quarter.

With 39 seconds left in the quarter, Carcioppolo drew an and-one, quickly followed by Pietrowski earning another point at the charity stripe on the following possession. After three quarters of play, John Carroll possessed a 52-31 lead.

The final quarter of play saw the Blue Streaks continue to run away with the game, as the lead would advance to twenty points early on. After a couple of stalled-out offensive possessions, Katie Zatta came in clutch with a big three-pointer. With five minutes left in the game, John Carroll led by 23.

In the game's final minutes, some new faces got to see the floor for the Blue Streaks. Brooke Laub, Kamryn Rohm, and Abigail Rosol earned their first collegiate points tonight.

Bella Carcioppolo led JCU with 13 points, while Ava Ryncarz followed with 12. Kaylie McKenny hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds and tallied a team-best 3 assists.

The game ended with the Blue Streaks putting away the Eagles by a score of 70-44. Tomorrow, John Carroll will play Alma in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, tipoff will be at 1 pm. The final game of the Winking Lizard Tip-Off Tournament will feature Penn State Behrend and Asbury. The Blue Streaks will host Night at the Races afterward the day's action concludes.
