Coach Kyle Basista Earns 2023 Great Lakes Regional Cross Country Coach of the Year

Coach Kyle Basista Earns 3rd Great Lakes Regional Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year Honor

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS - Another year, another accolade for Coach Basista to add to his stellar resume from the 2023 season.

The men's cross country team has been making history this season earning their third consecutive OAC and NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championships.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has awarded Kyle Basista and the rest of the coaching staff for garnering Great Lakes Coach of the Year honors for the third straight year after earning automatic bids to the NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championships since 2021.

A total of six Blue Streaks earned Great Lakes All-Region honors including (in alphabetical order): Isaac Bourne, Ryan Champa, Matt Costanzo, Dominic Delmoro, Ethan Domitrovich, and Ian Paul to win the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Cross Country Championship for the third consecutive year.

In Basista's tenth year as head coach at John Carroll, he has now earned his eighth overall Great Lakes Coach of the Year honor (third on the men's side for cross country). Back in the spring of 2023, the men's track & field team secured a spot on the podium, earning a 3rd place finish and bringing another trophy back to University Heights, Ohio. This was their second straight time achieving a spot on the podium in outdoor track & field.

"It's humbling to achieve this honor from the coaches, but it's more so a testament to our culture and leadership of our young men," says Coach Basista. "Great student-athletes make mediocre coaches look good and I'm fortunate and blessed to work with this group this season."

The men will toe the line this Saturday, November 18th for one last race of the 2023 campaign as they get ready for the 2023 NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championships hosted by Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The men's 8k race is set to go off at 11:00 am ET.
