Women's Basketball Triumphs Over Case Western Reserve at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- Thanks to an outstanding display on offense, John Carroll Women's Basketball cruised to a rebound win on Tuesday night.

The Blue Streaks defeated their Cleveland neighbors, the Case Western University Spartans, 81-66, at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

The Blue Streaks head into Thanksgiving break with a 3-2 record, remaining unbeaten at home at 3-0.

"We really wanted this win so we could hit the reset button after last weekend," said senior guard Halle Landies. "We did a great job of playing together, which made this feel like a great team win. It's awesome to get a victory like this, especially as we get ready to head into OAC play soon."

Halle Landies, Ava Ryncarz, and Maddie Pietrowski were the main sources on offense. Landies finished with a team-high 22 points, while Ryncarz and Pietrowski ended with 19 and 16. The Blue Streak also took care of business on the glass, leading in rebounds, 39-29.

"The team is always putting me in a spot to get open looks, so I'm very thankful for them," stated Landies on her 22-point performance. "We've all been shooting well as a team."

John Carroll began the game with an incredible 29-point effort, which is the most points scored in a quarter by JCU this season. Along with the lights-out shooting performance, JCU dominated on the boards, out rebounding the Spartans in the first quarter, 10-4.

Case Western Reserve gained momentum in the second quarter, fueled by Kayla Characklis' 11-point quarter. However, the offensive explosion continued for John Carroll. The Blue Streaks would follow up their record-setting quarter with a 23-point effort, and head into the half with a comfortable 52-34 lead.

Landies was the key to the offense in the first half, totaling 17 of the 52 points in the first half. Maddie Pietrowski also aided on offense through the first two quarters, racking up nine points and four rebounds.

The tides quickly changed for the Spartans, as they were able to limit the Blue Streaks offense to seven points in the quarter while adding 15 points to the board. JCU'S 18-point lead quickly turned into just a 10-point margin over the Spartans.

However, John Carroll found its footing early in the fourth quarter. A quick five points from Landies, which included a deep three-pointer right before the shot clock expired.

The clutch shot laid the foundation for a 7-2 run to begin the final ten minutes of play. While JCU had five turnovers that gave light to Case Western Reserve, John Carroll's 11 rebounds in the fourth quarter allowed JCU to prevail in the end.

The Blue Streaks will host Fredonia next Tuesday, Nov 28 at 6:00 pm.
