Women's Basketball Strides Past Fredonia at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The John Carroll Women's Basketball team returned to the floor for the first time since Thanksgiving break on Tuesday, and showed no signs of rust.

The Blue Streaks came away with a 70-53 win over the Fredonia State Blue Devils at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

John Carroll came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, as a 5-0 run in the first couple minutes quickly ballooned to an early 12-2 advantage. Free throws and rebounding ruled the day early for the Blue Streaks, as they shot 6-for-8 from the line and out-rebound the Blue Devils 12-6 in the first quarter. John Carroll pushed ahead to a 22-8 lead after one.

JCU continued the offensive firepower, as sophomore forward Ava Ryncarz went on a solo run of nine points and an assist, expanding the Blue Streak lead to 37-12 halfway through the second quarter. The Blue Devils finally found a break through cracks of the John Carroll defense as the visitors went on a late 7-0 run late in the quarter. However, the deficit created by JCU was too much to overcome as the Blue Streaks entered halftime with a 37-19 lead.

Ryncarz and sophomore guard Bella Carcioppolo led the way offensively for JCU, both recording 11 points. The reigning Ohio Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week, Halle Landies, also added five points. Blue Devil junior guard, Mary Culeton, led Fredonia State with five points at the break.

Both teams entered the third quarter trading baskets, but an and one converted by Carcioppolo catapulted the sophomore to a new career-high point total. And so, things began to once again shift things for the Blue Streaks. A short run from Fredonia was quickly put to bed by the Blue Streaks, as John Carroll's pesky defense continued to give the Blue Devils fits all night. A back-and-forth pushed the Blue Streaks to a 56-38 lead going into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, Fredonia continued to push the pace of the second half, but everytime it looked like a Blue Devil run was imminent, John Carroll would answer with a stop or a basket. Another three-pointer from Ryncarz resulted in another career-high for JCU, as the sophomore reached 22 points.

That would seal the deal for JCU, pushing JCU to 4-2 on the season. The defeat for the Fredonia would be their first of the year, moving them to 4-1 on the 2023 campaign.

Career nights from both Carcioppolo and Ryncarz ruled the day for the Blue Streaks as they would lead JCU with 19 and 22 points, respectively. Ryncarz also added 12 rebounds, resulting in her third career double-double in her short time in University Heights. Allie Wandell led all Blue Devil scorers with 12 points while also adding seven rebounds.

The John Carroll Blue Streaks hit the road to Ada, Ohio to take on the formerly No. 17 ranked Ohio Northern Polar Bears for their first OAC contest (ONU dropped out of the WBCA poll this week but continues to receive votes).
