Women's Basketball Fall Short At Ohio Northern in OAC Opener

ADA, Ohio -- John Carroll Women's Basketball traveled to Ohio Northern University today to take on the team's first Ohio Athletic Conference opponent. With a delayed start time, the game tipped off at 2:30 pm. The Blue Streaks looked to secure their first road win of the season and improve their record from 4-2. The Polar Bears came into the afternoon 1-3, all three losses by fewer than 10 points.

The Polar Bears showcased why they previously held a #17 ranking in Division III, earning a 58-38 win over JCU.

Ohio Northern won the tip to start the game and scored first. Sophomore Ava Ryncarz answered back quickly to tie up the game at two. The Polar Bears outrebounded the Streaks and capitalized on foul shots, allowing them to take the lead early. A critical three by freshman Brooke Laub cut the Polar Bear lead in half. Unfortunately, missed drives to the basket allowed for the lead to be extended once again. Junior Maddie Pietrowski hit two needed free throws after being fouled in the paint, and she quickly followed with a made jumpshot in the next possession. Incredible defense on both sides ended the first quarter with a close score of ONU 14 - JCU 13.

The second quarter started with the same lock down defense by both teams. Ava Ryncarz started off the Blue Streak scoring once again after making an offensive rebound. The pace was pushed on both ends of the court with plenty of fast breaks and quick shots taken. Bella Carcioppolo knocked down a three right as the shot clock expired to keep the game within one. Maddie Pietrowski tied the game at 19 with a made free throw, but could not make the second shot to take the lead. Brynn Serbin retook the lead for ONU with a made jump shot. Back-to-back-to-back steals characterized the next stretch of play. The first half ended with a buzzer-beater triple by Serbin to make the score 26-20 ONU going into halftime.

The start of the third quarter continued the trend of tough defense with the first point being scored a minute into the quarter by ONU's Brooke Allen on a free throw. Pietrowski scored the first point for JCU with another made free throw, but the Polar Bears continued to extend their lead thanks to trips to the foul line, stretching the margin to 19 points at the end of the third with a score of 44-25.
The last 10 minutes of play started off with senior Halle Landies scoring three on a jump shot, bringing JCU's total to 28. Bella Carcioppolo sank two free throws to continue chipping away at the ONU lead. The Blue Streaks were able to shrink the ONU lead to 15 with 2:50 left in the game due to a basket made by Brooke Laub. But ONU did not allow a late comeback, as the final score of the match up was 58-38 in Ohio Northern's favor.

Points from players off the bench really made the difference in tonight's match up. The Polar Bears had 28 points off the bench, while The Blue Streaks had only 6. Bella Carcioppolo led the scoring for the Blue Streaks with 10 points, trailed closely by Maddie Pietrowski, who had 9 points in the game.

The Blue Streaks are back home on Wednesday, December 6 against crosstown rival Baldwin Wallace University. Tip off for that game is at 7 pm in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
