Yellow Jackets Outlast Women's Basketball in Crosstown Rivalry Matchup

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – In a game dedicated to Morgan's Message, John Carroll Women's Basketball was defeated its crosstown rival, Baldwin Wallace, in a hard-fought physical game, 64-55.

The defeat marks John Carroll's first within the confines of the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center during the 2023-24 campaign.

To open the game, sophomore guard Ava Ryncarz drained a three to get the party started in University Heights. The Yellow Jackets were not fazed, as they started to break down the Blue Streak defense and get some tough baskets in the paint. A couple late fast break buckets from Baldwin Wallace evened the score after one at 16-16.

Baskets came at a premium for both squads in the second quarter. Turnovers and tough shots were consistent for both squads as only a combined 20 points were scored in the second. John Carroll held a late two point advantage until Caely Ressler hit a jumper with a second remaining, evening the score at the break at 26.

Junior guard Maddie Pietrowski led all scorers in the first half with eight points.

The Blue Streaks and Yellow Jackets continued to trade buckets in the third quarter, but Baldwin Wallace began to pull away midway through the third quarter. Junior forward Bella Vaillant sparked a 8-0 Yellow Jacket run which expanded the lead to 36-30. A bucket from senior Halle Landies and a triple from Ava Ryncarz cut the deficit to one. But back-to-back threes from BW guards Alek Johnson and Kaycie Badylak and another buzzer-beater for the Yellow Jackets gave them their largest advantage of the night, 46-37.

When it looked like the Yellow Jackets were beginning to pull away, a layup from freshman Abigail Rosol and a three from sophomore Katie Zatta cut the BW lead to four midway through the fourth. Triples from Zatta and Laub brought some much needed momentum for the Blue Streaks, but Baldwin Wallace was not fazed, as senior Carolyn Wochele sunk a three pointer that proved to be the dagger. Clutch free throws down the stretch from the Yellow Jackets sealed the deal, clinching a final score of 64-55.

With the win, Baldwin Wallace moves to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in OAC action. John Carroll falls for the second consecutive game, moving them to 4-4 and 0-2 in conference play against a pair of OAC squads ranked in the Top 25 in the preseason.

Vaillant led all scorers with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Alyssa Miller also added 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. Ryncarz and Pietrowski both had 10 points which led the way for John Carroll, while Abigail Rosol tied a career high with nine points.

The John Carroll Women's Basketball team returns to the floor on Saturday for another home OAC matchup against Muskingum at 2 pm.
