Men's Lacrosse Uses Offensive Outbursts to Down Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For spring break, John Carroll Men's Lacrosse opted not to go south, but west.

And up about 6,000 feet. The Blue Streaks are in Colorado for a 2-game swing, starting with a Friday night game under the lights at Colorado College.

The Blue Streaks passed the first test of the weekend, with long offensive runs powering a 13-11 victory, the team's first of the 2023 campaign.

The first half was a seesaw affair at 6,035 feet above sealevel. The Tigers grabbed an early lead, but it didn't last. Tanner Gill-Snow executed a beautiful dodge and rip leftside for the tie at the 5:59 mark. A quick bouncer by Morgan Morrell gave John Carroll the lead less than a minute later.

Matthew Berdysiak found room top shelf to make it three in a row for the Blue Streaks. The 3-1 lead stood at the end of the first quarter.

The Blue Streaks continued to score in the second half. Joe Rautenstrauch's boys often waited for the shot clock to drain, then took advantage of a restless Tiger defense. At 13:48 of the second, Ian Venard found twine, shooting a low-to-high goal from the hip on the man-up off a Berdysiak assist. The score marked Venard's first goal since February 27, 2021, as the senior is back from an injury that caused him to miss out on last season.

Tanner Gill-Snow then finished off a long possession with a straightaway shot that beat the goalie off a Morrell assist. The Blue Streaks capped off a 6-0 run with a Morrell goal that beat the goalie five-hole.

Colorado College recovered with three straight goals, but the end of the half belonged to John Carroll. After JCU drew a penalty, Matthew Russo charged in from X, beat his defender with speed, and sank a left-handed goal with 34 seconds left. That beauty set John Carroll ahead at halftime, 7-4.

Aidan Dugan got the scoring going in the third quarter with a nice tally just a couple minutes into the period. Meanwhile, the Tigers poked and prodded as JCU's defense, but the Blue Streaks were not faked out by any of CC's dodges.

Colin Morrissey pushed the advantage further off a perfect Morrell pass. The Tigers thought they had forced a turnover and were preparing for a transition chance. But before they could, Morrell fired in a quick pass to Morrissey for a goal.

Colorado College responded with a couple goals, slimming the margin to 9-6 JCU after three quarters.

The Tigers further trimmed the deficit at the start of the fourth quarter, slimming the margin to just one goal, 9-8. But then Gill-Snow hit a low bouncer that shot past the keeper off a Berdysiak assist, a key momentum-stopper that halted a 4-0 CC run.

Off the ensuing faceoff, the Blue Streaks fired down the field. Berdysiak scored as he was being pushed into the crease, and JCU stole all the energy. The Blue Streaks kept pushing, as Gill-Snow sent a rocket top cheese for a picture-perfect goal off a Dugan helper.

The three goals in the span of 57 seconds proved to be the difference. That offensive outburst swung the game in JCU's favor.

With 6:16 left, Morrissey found twine again off a Morrell assist, leading CC to call a timeout with the visitors ahead, 13-8.

Colorado College scored some goals late, but the Blue Streaks survived, and advanced to 1-1 with the win.

Gill-Snow topped the team with 4 goals, tying Morrell for the team lead with 5 points. Morrell also added 4 ground balls, second only to Nicholas Yemma, who tallied 5 while going 13-for-26 on faceoffs.

John Carroll is back in action on Sunday, facing Rhodes College at 11 am MT (1 pm ET).
