Michelle Morgan Named a 2022-23 Cushman & Wakefield Athletics Director of the Year

Morgan has served as the athletic director at John Carroll since 2018.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- On Monday morning, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced the 28 winners of the Cushman & Wakefield AD of the Year Award (ADOY).

Amongst the winners from Division III was John Carroll's outgoing Senior Director of Athletics Michelle Morgan.

Morgan has served as the athletic director at John Carroll since 2018. In February, she accepted an opportunity to be the next Commissioner of the Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA) and College Hockey America (CHA), which are conferences for men's and women's Division I ice hockey. Her final day at JCU is April 12.

The award spans seven divisions (NCAA FBS, FCS, Division I-AAA, II, III, NAIA/Other Four-Year Institutions and Junior College/Community Colleges). Winners will be recognized in conjunction with the 58th Annual NACDA & Affiliates Convention at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Fla., at the beginning of the Association-Wide Featured Session on Tuesday, June 13, starting at 4 p.m.

About Michelle Morgan:
Morgan arrived in University Heights in the fall of 2018. Under her watch, the Blue Streaks won 39 Ohio Athletic Conference Championships and made a total of 42 NCAA postseason appearances. John Carroll has won the OAC Men's All-Sports Trophy three times under her leadership. Overall, the Blue Streaks have won seven OAC Men's All-Sports Trophies in a row, and lead the standings on both the men's and the women's sides through the fall season.

Morgan helped to fundraise significantly during her tenure, raising $160,000 on the first-ever Day of Giving for athletics, establishing a $500,000 fund for the creation of the Champions Endowment, and securing other gifts. During her tenure, the Assistant Athletic Director for Student Success and Leadership position was created and seven current head coaches were hired. In July 2022, Morgan was awarded with an Honorary ESPY for Female Administrator of the Year via ESPN Cleveland not long after helping to add women's wrestling as the 24th sport at JCU.

Morgan also oversaw upgrades to athletic facilities during her tenure, including the Short Family Tennis Center which was unveiled last spring. Don Shula Stadium, the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, Herb Eisele Blue Gold Room, and Johnson Natatorium have all seen improvements since 2018. Additionally, she oversaw the launching of a new brand and visual identity.

Morgan has served in a variety of leadership roles at the NCAA level while at JCU. Morgan was appointed to a four-year term on the NCAA Division III Management Council in 2019. She assumed the role of Chair of the council in January 2022, and served through January 2023. Previously, she served as the Vice Chair of the Management Council. Morgan also served on the NCAA's the Division III Championships Committee, The Division III Advisory Council, the Division III Administrative Committee, the NCAA Strategic Planning and Finance Committee, the DIII Joint Legislative Steering Committee, NCAA Convention Planning subcommittee ,the Division III Football Concussion Task Force, and the Division III Strategic Positioning Platform Working Group.

Previously, she served nationally on the NCAA's Olympic Sports Liaison Committee, Sportsmanship & Ethical Conduct Committee, the Interpretations and Legislation Committee, Division III Playing and Practice Seasons, and the Division III Women's Ice Hockey committee. She holds membership in NACDA, the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA), and Women Leaders in College Sports.
