Spring Break Preview: March 3-11, 2023

The Blue Streaks have a busy week all across the country. 
The Blue Streaks head into spring break after a series of weeks full of academic rigor and athletic challenges. But, for the majority of winter and spring athletic squads, the show goes on.

John Carroll is set to send multiple teams to different destinations this coming weekend, but also throughout the upcoming week.

Here's what the breakdown of events looks like:

Saturday

Indoor Track and Field

After a successful run at Ohio Athletic Conference Championships, several Blue Streaks look to continue their indoor season with a weekend trip to the Ohio Northern Polar Bear Final Qualifier, in hopes of punching a ticket to NCAA Division III National Championships. 

Corey Minton will take part in the triple jump, and Genevieve Arnold will take her launch to her final hops in the long jump. Caroline Beery will round out the field events in the pole vault.

In terms of running events, the race to watch is the Men's 4x4 relay, featuring Basheer Alramahi, Garrett Clark, Tyler Gast and Dustin Horner. On the women's side, Taylor Anthony will run the 60m sprint. 

Additionally, Claire Eberhardt, Rosie Murray, Ellie Kitsmiller, and Abby Schroff will travel to Tufts University for the National Qualifying Meet in the distance medley relay.

The list of Nationals participants will be released on Sunday at 7 p.m. The set list of those that qualified will be available for viewing on the NCAA website (https://www.ncaa.org/).

For those that earn a spot in NCAA DIII Nationals, competition will take place in Birmingham, AL on the weekend of March 10. 

Men's Basketball

John Carroll hoops earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Blue Streaks are set to play Oswego State in the Second Round on Saturday at 5:45 pm.

John Carroll is eager to make some noise in the NCAA Tournament, and started on a good note on Friday with a victory over Albertus Magnus. 
 
Oswego State is the host of the pod, and opened with a 80-62 win over Marymount (VA) on Friday evening. The Lakers carry a #6 ranking in the latest D3hoops.com rankings. 

Men's Lacrosse

John Carroll Men's Lacrosse opens up their 2023 campaign with a 2:00 p.m. game at Roanoke College in Salem, VA on Saturday. 

The Blue Streaks are coming into their schedule with a 1st place spot in the OAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. After a 17-3 season and sixth consecutive OAC championship, John Carroll possesses some serious talent.

Matt Berdysiak returns to the field with 112 goals on his career and 2022 First Team All-OAC honors. 

In net, the Blue Steaks can feel confident in the efforts of Jon Gaglio, who was a 2022 IMCLA All-Region Honorable Mention and a 2022 First Team All-OAC honoree.

With the spring season underway, John Carroll is eager to bring another OAC trophy to University Heights.

Sunday

Women's Tennis

The Blue Streaks board the plane to Orlando, FL for a Sunday matchup against Winona State University.

John Carroll has suffered two losses on the season, so the Blue Streaks are amped to continue competition in hopes of tallying some wins for their record.

It will certainly be a busy week, as the squad also has matches penciled in against Cedarville University, Spring Arbor University, St. Cloud University, and Seton Hill University during their trip to the Sunshine State.
 
Men's Tennis

Similar to the women's squad, John Carroll Men's Tennis also travels to Orlando, FL for some matches against a plethora of team, starting on Sunday.

The Blue Streaks have lost four matches thus far, so the team looks forward to the spring break games as tune-up matches for the upcoming OAC season. 

Throughout their week in Florida, John Carroll will take the concrete against St. Thomas University, Cedarville University, Spring Arbor University, Augustana College and Stonehill College. 

Baseball

John Carroll Baseball comes off a 2-1 start to the 2023 season as they prepare for their endeavors in Auburndale, FL for a series of double-headers during the spring recess.

On Sunday, the Blue Streaks play Trine University at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. A day later, the Blue and Gold faceoff against Ursinus College at 3:15 p.m. and 5:45 p.m.

In a quick turnaround, John Carroll will take the field at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, for a single game against Anna Maria College.

The Blue Streaks have a brief break from competition during the bulk of the week, but will return to the field on March 10th and 11th for double-headers against the University of Minnesota Morris and Penn State Altoona. 

Softball

John Carroll Softball looks to embrace the warmth of Naples, FL during the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

In their first game of the season, the Blue Streaks will take the field at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday against Haverford College. At 1:00 p.m., John Carroll will play their second game of the day against Rockford University.

During the rest of the week, the Blue Streaks are faced with a schedule that consists of a variety of teams.

Clark University, Alverno College, Drew University, Swarthmore College, Haverford College, Finlandia University, Grove City College and University of Pittsburgh at Bradford are among the squads that the Blue Streaks will see during the trip.

For each respective day of the week, after the completion of the weekend, John Carroll will play two games each day, the first of the day at 9:00 a.m., followed by the 11:00 a.m. game (Monday through Friday).

The Blue Streaks are eager to begin the 2023 season with a variety of new players and members of the coaching staff.

Women's Lacrosse

John Carroll Women's Lacrosse will see a handful of U.S. states during their spring recess bout of competition.

On Sunday, the Blue Streaks face-off against Stevens in Hoboken, NJ at 1:00 p.m. On Wednesday, the Blue and Gold take a trip to Danbury, CT for a game against Western Connecticut State at 5:00 p.m. In completing the week, John Carroll heads to Rochester, NY for their final game of the week against the Rochester Institute of Technology.

So far, the Blue Streaks faced some fierce competition, so the squad has been preparing to earn a handful of victories over the break to boost morale and confidence. 

NEXT WEEKEND

Men's Wrestling

After a successful performance at the NCAA Division III Central Region Tournament, John Carroll Wrestling is proud to send three athletes to the NCAA Division III National Championships.

Andrew Perelka, Patrick McGraw and Luke Reicosky will take the mat at the culmination of the season next Friday (March 10)  and Saturday (March 11) in Roanoke, VA.
