Softball Splits with Heidelberg in Afternoon Showdown

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- On a beautiful day at Bracken Field, the John Carroll Softball team was looking to continue their success in conference play against Heidelberg after sweeping Capital last Friday.

The Blue Streaks split the doubleheader against the Student Princes, taking game one 4-3 and falling 6-1 in game two.

The first game featured a dramatic walk-off, while the second contest was all about the long ball for the Student Princes.

Game One
Danielle Orendi started off strong on the mound for the John Carroll defense, striking out two batters in the top of the first and holding the Student Princes to one run.

After a quiet bottom of the first, the Blue Streaks continued to tamp down on the Heidelberg hitters. With a runner on first, the Blue Streaks made a beautiful 1-6-3 double play from Orendi to Lexie Genovese at second and Mackenzie Stease at first.

Stease was a key on offense, as well. The senior knocked one over the fence to start the scoring for the Blue Streaks in the bottom of the second. Then with a runner on first, Genovese sailed one deep into right field to double and scored a run, taking a 2-1 lead over the Student Princes.

Heidelberg claimed a home run of their own in the top of the third inning with a runner on first, making it a 3-2 game.

Stease was a weapon for the John Carroll offense again in the third inning. With Kendall Trunzo at third and Kaylyn Odelli at second, she hit a sacrifice fly to the shortstop shallow in the outfield. Trunzo scored to tie the game at three each.

Defense tightened up for both teams in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, keeping the score tied 3-3 going into the seventh.

Bri Callow took the mound in the top of the seventh, striking out the Student Princes' final batter of the game with runners on second and third.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Blue Streaks got two in scoring position with Trunzo at second and Eliana Rodriguez at third due to an error by the Student Princes. Alyssia Carmichael hit one to the shortstop, but Rodriguez outran the throw home to take the game, 4-3.

Game Two
Defenses for both teams held strong to open game two.

Heidelberg broke through the John Carroll pitching by way of the long bomb, hitting one over the fence to take a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Streaks found offensive success in the bottom of the third. After Alyssia Carmichael doubled to center field, Kaylyn Odelli hit a triple to right field to tie the game.

The Student Princes had a field day in the top of the fifth inning. Both of their first two batters hit over the fence to take a 3-1 lead. After a switch at the mound, the Blue Streaks were able to get themselves out of the inning.

Heidelberg's offense was unrelenting in the sixth inning. Gabbie Stallbaum hit a home run over the fence in center field, her second of the game.

Bella Carcioppolo tripled to right field in the bottom of the sixth, but she was left stranded on third, unable to add a tally to the Blue Streaks' score.

The Student Princes extended their lead in the top of the seventh inning, tallying two more runs to take a 6-1 lead.

The Blue Streaks could not score in the bottom of the seventh, making the final score 6-1 in Heidelberg's favor.

The Blue Streaks are now 3-5 in OAC play and will host Ohio Northern Saturday, April 15 with games at 1 pm and 3 pm.
