Men's Lacrosse Continues April Win Streak by Burying Purple Raiders

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- April is often the magic month for John Carroll Men's Lacrosse.

The 2023 season is looking no different for the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll is a perfect 5-0 to start the month of April, thanks to a lopsided 25-6 conquest of the Mount Union Purple Raiders in Alliance.

In the 7-year reign of Joe Rautenstrauch, the Blue Streaks are 35-4 in the month of April, with only one loss to a team besides Baldwin Wallace. This season, the Blue Streaks have won the 5 games in April by an average of 18-4. Each game has decided by six or more goals, with the last three won by 19, 17, and 19 goals.

In Alliance on Wednesday evening, the Purple Raiders managed to keep it close for a time, trailing just 3-2 at the 5:12 mark of the first quarter. Vinny Fiorella scored JCU's opening goal and Colin Morrissey buried man-up goals off assists by Tanner Gill-Snow and Moran Morrell. Morrissey added a late tally off a Jacob Hoexum assist to push JCU ahead, 4-2, entering the second stanza.

In the second quarter, John Carroll's offense blasted off. After JCU and Mount Union exchanged goals to start the quarter, the Blue Streaks fired up a 6-0 run to end the period. Morrissey opened the onslaught off a Matt Berdysiak assist. Camden Uchic tallied his first collegiate goal next, and Morrell kept up the pressure, both on Berdysiak assists.

Down the stretch, Morrell found twine twice, Berdysiak fired it home once, and Ian Venard ended the fun at 11-3 heading into halftime.

John Carroll continued the scoring party in the third quarter with a 7-0 run. Berdysiak, Venard, Josh Lombardo, Morrissey, and Morrell took turns burying goals. After Morrell's fourth-quarter opening goal (with a Brendan Hein assist), Mount Union at last stopped the bleeding after a 14-0 run.

The Blue Streaks added some tallies late, including the first goals of the campaign for Brody Forrest and Lucas Bell. All in all, the scoring was spread out, as 13 Blue Streaks registered a goal or an assist. Morrissey did the most damage with a season-high 7 goals, while Morrell got 7 points off 5 goals and 2 assists.

Nicholas Yemma dominated the faceoffs, winning 20-of-26 and grabbing a team-high 11 groundballs. Conor Ryan topped the team with 3 caused turnovers. Alexander Sykas accumulated a career-high 6 groundballs, while Brendan Hein tabbed a season-best 7 GBs.

The Blue Streaks return home on Saturday, hosting Muskingum at 1 pm with Senior Day festivites to follow immediately after the game.
