Season Ends for Men's Tennis With Loss to ONU in OAC Tournament Semifinal

MASON, Ohio -- John Carroll Men's Tennis will get one trophy from the 2022-23 campaign, but not two.

On Saturday, the Blue Streaks collected a share of the Ohio Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship with Ohio Northern and Otterbein. But unfortunately, an OAC tournament title is not in the cards.

The Blue Streaks dropped a 6-3 loss to the Polar Bears in the OAC Tournament Semifinal at the Lindner Family Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.

John Carroll finishes the year at 6-11 on the season, as a the team found its groove later in the campaign following a very challenging non-conference slate.

The Blue Streaks started with a spirited doubles matchup, but the Polar Bears won two of three in a threatening portent for singles play. The lone victory belonged to Phillip Gorun and Kevin Wacnik. The strong pair won the #3 doubles match, 8-6. The duo finish 5-0 on the year as a doubles team.

Logan Langovsky and Grant Sarnowski experienced defeat at the top spot, 8-4. Anthony Markello and Nathan Palinkas also lost at #2 doubles, 8-3.

Langovsky got revenge in his singles contest. The Green native secured a 6-1, 6-4 victory at #1 singles, the first to finish. His win tied the bout at 2-2. But then the Polar Bears regained the lead, as Palinkas dropped a 4-6, 3-6 decision at #5. Sarnowski re-evened the score at 3-3, with a conquest at #2 singles. The junior collected a hard-earned three set win, 6-1, 0-6, 6-3.

But then the Polar Bears caught fire.

Ohio Northern sent the Blue Streaks to the brink with a conquest at #6 singles over Gorun, 4-6, 3-6. And then, the #4 and #3 singles matches ended near simultaneously. Wacnik accepted a 4-6, 6-7 loss at #4 and Markello surrendered a 3-6, 5-7 defeat at #3.

And so, the season concluded for the Blue Streaks. Despite the defeat, the first season of the Walt Oden era was a positive one, with noticeable progress and a trophy to add to the collection. Much of the roster will hopefully return next year, with good tidings on the horizon for the program.
