Men's Lacrosse Falters at #6 Dickinson in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

CARLISLE, Pa. – While John Carroll Men's Lacrosse has enjoyed success in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament and in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament, a victory in the Second Round has proved elusive.

The Blue Streaks experienced defeat in the Second Round on Saturday again, falling to the #6 Dickinson College Red Devils, 19-3.

With the loss, the Blue Streaks conclude the season with a 15-3 record.

"Dickinson has a talented offense, but we didn't do ourselves any favors. We made some stops at first, but the time of possession was in their favor, as they had the ball a lot," said Head Coach Joe Rautenstrauch. "Dickinson won 19-of-23 faceoffs. You can't keep it close when you have to play that much defense. It's a tough way to go out, but when you look back at it, it was a good season. I'm super proud of our team and our seniors overall, they're great kids who work hard."

Prior to the game, the Blue Streaks knew they would need a solid start to have a shot at upsetting the #6 Red Devils. The first quarter was not the start the Blue Streaks we're looking for.

The Red Devils took a couple possessions to score, but soon found the back of the net. Dickinson tallied five goals in the opening stanza, while blanking the Blue Streaks. John Carroll looked meticulous on offense, but Dickinson stood tall and forced several shot clock violations and turnovers off bad passes.

John Carroll got a promising first possession of the second quarter, with a couple nice shots including one following a hard-earned groundball. But Dickinson fired up a quick transition goal after the stop, and added another quickly. At 9:51, John Carroll got on the board with a Matt Berdysiak goal, placing the score at 8-1.

Following a pair of Dickinson responses, Colin Morrissey got a pass from Alexander Sykas off a transition chance, and fired it home. The 10-2 lead held at halftime for the Red Devils.

If John Carroll was going to get back in the game, a strong start to the third quarter would be critical. Unfortunately, that would not be in the cards, as the Red Devils scored two goals in the opening 3:30 of the stanza to push the margin to 10 goals.

Josh Lombardo got on the board in the third, picking up a loose pass near the crease and faking out the goalie before finding the low left corner for a goal. But Dickinson still led big after three, 16-3. Dickinson finished it off with three late goals.

In addition to the Red Devils also dominated the groundballs, 47-21. Individually, Morrissey led JCU with 2 points, Sykas topped the team with 3 GBs, and Gaglio tabbed 12 saves.

"We talked about it after the game in the locker room, we don't want the success we've had as a team to be left in the shadows," said grad student Cam Cecere. "We're proud of what we did this season. There's no such thing as a loss that feels good, and this one will sting for the rest of my left as it ends my lacrosse career. But I'm grateful to be an alum of the program, led by a great coaching staff. I have been blessed to play an extra year for Coach Raut, who's been an incredible leader and role model for me ad the team. I've been blessed for my JCU experience. I'm grateful to have these brothers on the team for life."
