Minton, Grillo, Phillip, 4x100 Relay Highlight Fantastic Day at Harrison Dillard Twilight Meet

The Blue Streaks set records in the Triple Jump, 800m, and 4x100 Relay on Friday in Berea.
BEREA, Ohio – Under the lights of George Finnie Stadium, John Carroll Men's Track & Field shined quite bright.

The Blue Streaks improved national rankings in several events across the two-day meet at Baldwin Wallace. And in doing so, the Blue Streaks fired up records in the 800m, 1500m, and the triple jump.

On Friday, the story of the field events was Corey Minton. The last chance meets are often when you see the top jumps, and Minton showed why. After a strong week of practice and prep, the veteran roared for a school record in the triple jump. Minton tallied a hop of 14.78m, good for second place. But more importantly, that jump propelled him unofficially to 12th in NCAA Division III. Friday's effort vastly improves his odds of making the big dance in a couple weeks.

On the track side, the story of Friday was the setting of another school record by Alex Phillip. The St. Vincent-St. Mary grad locked in a new JCU best in the 1500m, firing up a quick time of 3:46.06 to surpass Ian Pierson's previous school record. That mark not only won Phillip the race, but fires him up to seventh nationally in that event. On the outdoor side, that gives him three JCU records. Ethan Domitrovich finished second and finds himself on the edge of the national rankings with an unofficial 19th fastest time of 3:48.08.

On the sprints side, one of the major highlights of the day was the march upwards of the 4x100 relay. Cam Klauke, Garrett Clark, Mick Doyle, and Jimmy Kartsonas clocked in at a red-hot 40.53, shaving 0.20 seconds off their previous best time. That may not seem like a lot, but it advances the JCU quartet to second in the country.

In the mid-distance, Max Grillo and Caleb Correia looked to cut time in the 800m. Grillo tallied a time of 1:51.16 while Correia followed very closely at 1:51.32. Grillo snuck into the top 25 nationally while Correia sits just outside of it. The dynamic duo finished first and second in the race. And in doing so, Grillo paved a new 800m school record. The previous standard of 1:51.54 belonged to Greg Adams, set way back in 2004.

In the 400m, Basheer Alramahi upped his standing nationally. With a time of 47.40, the Westlake native moved a couple spots on the leaderboard to 15th unofficially. The freshman also won the race. In the 400m hurdles, Doyle improved slightly with a time of 54.10, also a PR for the vet.

In the 200m, Garrett Clark took third with a time of 21.46. Tyler Gast finished 14th but did pick up a PR with a time of 22.15.

On Thursday, Alec Gorman (36.83m) and Tanner Francis (30.80m) repped JCU in the javelin, as Francis hit a PR. Zach Szafarski (41.72m) and Gorman (32.09m) competed in the discus. Noah Schroeder finished top 10 in the hammer throw with a mark of 51.06m to highlight the throws on Friday.

Ahead this week is the Mount Union Last Chance on Tuesday and Wednesday.
