Men's Lacrosse Roars into the OAC Tournament Championship By Clipping Capital

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The speech in the locker room was a good one.

John Carroll Men's Lacrosse made a second-half statement in a 16-7 victory over the Capital Comets after a narrow first half.

With the triumph, the Blue Streaks (13-2) burst into the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Championship. Against who else, but Baldwin Wallace, for the third straight time.

The first half was a very physical affair.

Capital got on the board first, striking first at 10:45. John Carroll took a few more minutes to get on the board, as Morgan Morrell took a feed from Aidan Dugan for the team's starting goal of the game. The teams then traded goals down the stretch, with Colin Morrissey providing a goal before Capital answered.

With 2:15 left in the quarter, the Blue Streaks got a sweet goal in transition to head into the second with a lead. Morrell ripped a sweet feed from Alexander Sykas to the back of the net. In short, Morrell's 50th goal was a work of art.

The second quarter remained physical, but also took the look of a chess match.

The two teams only managed a goal apiece. For John Carroll, Morrell fired home a tally off a Kevin Hack assist at 12:39. But the rest of the way, neither team scored. The teams traded jabs physically and each took timeouts over the course of the period, going over strategy. But the defenses stood deadlocked and the Blue Streaks kept a narrow 4-3 lead into the third quarter.

At 11:40, the Blue Streaks started revving up the offense. Morrissey then tallied a goal on a rebound. Capital responded with a marker to narrow the deficit, but then John Carroll really got going. Tanner Gill-Snow scored a nice one unassisted. Then Matt Berdysiak took a Morrell feed and fired it home. Morrell did the trick himself at 2:16 off a Matt Russo assist.

Late in the quarter, the Comets appeared poised to get back into it, but a critical penalty on Capital took away a goal and granted John Carroll a man-up opportunity. The Blue Streaks took advantage, with Morrissey finding twine off a Morrell helper. And so, the Blue Streaks carried a decisive 10-4 lead into the fourth.

Morrell kept the fun going in the final stanza, getting a goal just 1:14 into the period. The Comets tried to stay in it with back-to-back goals. But then with 9:07, Kevin Hack announced his presence with authority with a huge goal. A couple minutes later, Ian Venard scored on a filthy bounce shot off a Max Cook assist.

The Blue Streaks were not satisfied, though. Morrell scored on a do-it-all goal, registering a caused turnover, groundball, and a far-out goal. Less than a minute later, Cook provided one of his own, and then Morrell kept pouring it on with a pretty 2-on-1 strike off an assist from Michael Bevington

Morrell tied a career high with 8 goals on the evening. Morrissey also tabbed a hat trick with 3 goals and tabbed a season-high 8 groundballs. Nicholas Yemma enjoyed a heck of a game on faceoffs, winning 15-of-24 and adding 8 GBs. On the defensive side, Conor Ryan did well with 3 caused turnovers.

John Carroll will head to Berea on Saturday to do battle with the Yellow Jackets with the OAC Championship on the line. The opening faceoff will be at 7 pm.
