Women's Basketball Falls Cold at Baldwin Wallace in Defeat

BEREA — In a rematch between heated rivals, the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets defended home court.

The Yellow Jackets defeated the John Carroll Blue Streaks, 71-35, at Ursprung Gymnasium.

John Carroll opened the match scoring the game's first 4 points. The Yellow Jackets responded and after a three and a couple layups, they pulled away late to claim an early 9-8 lead after one. Buckets were hard to come by for both teams as both teams shot 21% from the field, but the free throw advantage for the Yellow Jackets put them in the forefront early.

The offensive struggles continued into the second quarter as both teams combined for 21 points. JCU's shooting woes carried into the quarter as they shot the same percentage as the previous period. However, a three-pointer from senior guard Halle Landies late in the quarter slimmed the Baldwin Wallace lead to six and gave the Blue Streaks some momentum going into the locker room.

Junior guard Maddie Pietrowski led John Carroll in scoring in the first half with four points, while adding an assist and a rebound.

The Yellow Jackets offense kicked it into high gear at the start of the third. Both teams traded buckets early on, but Baldwin Wallace exploded for a 15-2 run with four minutes left. BW junior guard Emily Irwin drained three deep balls, two in the final minute, to extend the Yellow Jacket lead to 48-25 going into the final quarter.

Baldwin Wallace continued to dominate both ends of the court carrying their momentum from the previous quarter. Three-pointers continued to drop for the Yellow Jackets as Kayla Jones, Kaycie Badylak, Rylee Bennett and Taylor Bass all joined the three point party. Stifling defense from BW was consistent throughout the entire game as they held JCU to just 22% shooting from the field and 19% from three, and their lowest scoring game of the season. Baldwin Wallace's second half offensive clinic and physical defense led them to 17th win on the season and a sweep of the Blue Streaks.

Sophomore forward Ava Ryncarz led the way offensively for John Carroll with 10 points and three rebounds. Baldwin Wallace had two players in double-figures, as Emily Irwin led the way with a game-high 11 points. Badylak was not too far behind with 10 points, while also adding six rebounds.

John Carroll looks to get back in the win column Saturday as they take on the Wilmington Quakers for Senior and Alumnae Day.
