Volleyball Falters Against Carnegie Mellon in Friday Night Action

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- The John Carroll Volleyball team welcomed a talented Carnegie Mellon team into the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center on Friday night. Although the Blue Streaks ultimately lost in straight sets, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-22), they competed until the final point.

This loss brings the Blue Streaks' overall record to 15-7, while the Tartans added their 10th non-conference win, improving their overall record to 14-8.

Before the match, JCU Volleyball commemorated its annual Morgan's Message Match, shining a light on mental health. The Carroll Crazies also provided pink shirts in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness.

The first set was a great battle between the two programs. The Blue Streaks surged ahead early with a 7-3 lead after three scoring three of four consecutive points. Mary Kate Sheehan recorded two kills and Deja Whitten had one. After that, creating a sizable lead was tough for either team. An attack error by the Blue Streaks late in the set gave the Tartans a 20-17 lead. Even though JCU pulled back within two points, at 24-22, the Tartans held strong and secured the opening set win.

After the Blue Streaks kept it close early in the second set, the Tartans mounted an 8-1 run, only interrupted by a service error, to take a 20-12 lead. Kills by Marissa Lynch, Tess Humphrey, and Kendra Dziubinski, along with multiple errors by the Tartans gave the Blue Streaks life late in the set as they cut the lead down to 23-18. A tough break on the Blue Streaks' final serve resulted in an service error and ended the set, which gave the Tartans a 2-0 lead.

With their backs against the wall, it was now or never for the Blue Streaks as they entered the third set. Unfortunately, the Tartans seized the early momentum as they took a 5-2 lead after a service ace and an attack error by the Blue Streaks. The Blue and Gold responded with kills by Dziubinski and Sheehan to tie that game at 6-6. Just when it looked like the Tartans were stumbling, they flipped the switch and tallied 10 of the next 14 points to take a 16-10 lead. Abby Bednar refused to let her squad lose hope and recorded two kills that sparked an attempt at a comeback. The Blue Streaks twice cut the deficit down to two points, at 17-15 and 24-22, but the Tartans slammed the door on them both times and finished off a 25-22 victory.

Sheehan led the team with 10 kills, and Bednar was not far behind with 7. Haley Nicholson had a team-high 15 assists. Hailey Williams was strong on defense with 13 digs.
