John Carroll Men's Basketball Soars over Golden Eagles

John Carroll improves to 3-0 for the seventh year in a row

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS - Still in the beginning of their season, the Blue Streaks continue to impress.

John Carroll Men's Basketball defeated the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles by a score of 85-69 in the home opener for the 2024-2025 season at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

JCU improved to a 3-0 record, all in non-conference play.

While Brockport scored the first three points, the momentum didn't last long for the Golden Eagles, as the Blue Streaks responded by putting up a few baskets of their own. Towards the midpoint of the first half, the Blue Streaks got the crowd on their feet with back-to-back alley oops. The first was a pass from Luke Chicone to Will Yontek. The second was a pass from Chase Toppin to Henry Raynor

This momentum pushed John Carroll to continue to make key plays. Senior Omar Abuhamdeh would put in a key three-pointer, setting the score at 21-20, with John Carroll getting their first lead of the game at the halfway point.

With momentum, Luke Frazier would hit a wide open look for 3. With the bucket, Frazier joined the 1,000 career point club early on in his senior campaign.

The Blue Streaks took their momentum to the second half, holding a 47-37 lead over the Golden Eagles 47-37. The point leader for JCU in the first half was Luke Chicone, who scored a total of 12 points through 20 minutes of action.

JCU would continue to put their foot on the gas, as Yontek and the Blue Streaks started with possession in the second half. Yontek notched nine points for John Carroll throughout the game. Sophomore Aidan Fitzgerald would have himself a day, as he would make a key steal during the second half, aiding in back-to-back Blue Streaks baskets. He also recorded a total of 8 points, seven rebounds, and an assist.

With the win, the Blue Streaks would shoot 76.2% from the free throw line, going 16-of-21 in their shots. From the field, the Blue Streaks continued their offensive efforts, making 46.3% of their shots, including the 7 threes made from downtown.

It was a total team effort, as the Blue Streaks excelled on both ends of the court. Three players from JCU would also go on to score double digits throughout the match, with Luke Chicone leading the way with 18.

"Whatever I can do to contribute to this team is what I will do. Some nights it is scoring and some nights it is facilitating," Chicone commented. "Who knows what will happen next, but I am ready to put my body on the line to fight for a win on the court".
