Blue Streaks Pull Off Upset at #13 Case Western Reserve

The Blue Streaks defeated CWRU for the first time since 2013

CLEVELAND – Just because Ohio Athletic Conference play has wrapped up does not mean the regular season is over.

Far from it.

In a fantastic victory, John Carroll Volleyball conquered Case Western Reserve University, ranked #13 in the latest AVCA poll, in a 3-2 triumph.

The Blue Streaks roared out to win the first two sets before the Spartans fired back to force a fifth set. But tonight belonged to John Carroll, as the visitors beat the Spartans for the first time since 2013.

Case Western Reserve got out to a nice early start but JCU soon tied it at 12. Following a 3-point CWRU run, Michele Benoit called a timeout, and it worked. John Carroll went on an 8-1 tear, and then closed it out with authority, 25-18, with four points to end it. Abby Bednar did an exceptional job with nine of JCU's 20 kills, aided by nice passing from Tess Humphrey.

The visitors constructed a 15-9 lead before the Spartans chipped away and eventually snuck ahead, 19-13, thanks to a 10-3 run. But thanks to some CWRU attack errors down the stretch made possible by a varied JCU offense and stout defense, JCU dominated down the way, 7-4. Fittingly, Bednar closed out the 25-23 conquest.

The teams played evenly to open the third stanza. The teams traded short runs, but down the stretch, the Spartans gained momentum. JCU tried to stem the tide with a handful of thunderous kills, but the hosts proved resilient, staving off defeat with a 25-23 win.

The Spartans played quite well in the fourth set en route to a 25-15 victory. CWRU played a largely mistake-free set, with some aces mixed in to aid the cause.

However, the hosts could not avoid miscues in the fifth set, as five attack errors and three service errors greatly helped JCU. After the Spartans carved a narrow 4-3 lead, the Blue Streaks galloped to a 7-1 run, leading to a CWRU timeout. But nothing could stop the Streaks, as Marissa Lynch and Kendra Dziubinski provided key kills late to secure the tiebreaker in convincing fashion, 15-9.

Abby Bednar's offense defined the day. The grad student notched a season-high 23 kills. Tess Humphrey provided great passes all night, with a season-best 29 assists. Olivia Mogyordy tallied 31 assists, the third time she has surpassed 30 this year. Overall, it was a close match statistically.

Tonight's win ended a 10-match losing streak for JCU in the series history against the Spartans. It marked just the second win for JCU over CWRU since 2008, though interestingly, JCU now leads the series overall, 41-30.
