Volleyball Splits Final Two Regular Season Matches in Buffalo

BUFFALO – To close out the regular season, John Carroll Volleyball headed to Buffalo.

The Blue Streaks played a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday afternoon. John Carroll tallied a 3-0 sweep of SUNY Geneseo before falling in a 3-2 battle to the host Buffalo State.

JCU finishes the regular season with a 19-9 record, tying the second-highest regular season win total under Head Coach Michele Benoit. Now, the Blue Streaks look ahead to the start of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday at home.

JCU - 3, Geneseo, 0

An early 8-2 run made possible by a trio of Olivia Mogyordy aces set the stage for what would largely be a domination for the Blue Streaks. Natalie Glowe and Abby Bednar also caught fire down the stretch, part of a 25-10 opening set that was never in doubt.

The teams played to a 12-12 deadlock to start the second set. A couple of 3-point JCU bursts, the latter driven home by three straight Hailey Williams kills, powered JCU to a 25-20 conquest.

A 7-point jaunt early in the third set provided the juice, as a pair of Kallan Hrics kills and Kendra Dziubinski aces helped greatly. The Knights refused to go quietly, sneaking back into a 19-all tie. But from there, JCU fired up a 7-2 run to end it.

Abby Bednar anchored the offense with 8 kills, while Haley Nicholson tallied 21 assists. Olivia Mogyordy led the team with 14 digs.

JCU - 2, Buffalo State, 3

Similarly to the opening match, a big JCU run helped to set the tone, this time a 5-0 run to a 13-7 lead. But the Bengals counterpunched to narrow the deficit to one and then later take the lead, 20-18. Strong offense late clinched a narrow 25-23 Buffalo State first set win.

The second start started very evenly, until JCU went on a 5-point attack for a 20-16 lead. But Buffalo State quickly battled back for a 21-21 tie. JCU then rattled off three points in a row, but the Bengals fended off the defeat and even got to set point. But a late 3-0 JCU run secured a dramatic 29-27 victory to even things up.

The teams traded 4-point runs in the third set to fight to a 16-16 tie. Unfortunately for JCU, Buffalo State took command with a 6-0 run to roll to a 25-20 set victory.

A 6-point JCU run midway through the fourth set provided the energy needed for JCU to force a fifth set. It wasn't too close, as JCU ran away with a 25-19 conquest.

In the deciding set, it was a back-and-forth affair, with the teams battling to a 9-9 tie. JCU snuck ahead by a couple, but from there, Buffalo State found its killer instinct. The Bengals went on a 6-0 run to end the contest, aided by a couple JCU attack errors.

Hailey Williams guided the offense with 14 kills. Haley Nicholson set 30 assists, her third time reaching that figure. Olivia Mogyordy tabbed 30 digs for JCU.
