Men's Lacrosse Loses a Hard-Fought Home Battle to Ohio Wesleyan

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – In a battle of Ohio lacrosse strongholds, John Carroll fell just short in a spirited battle with Ohio Wesleyan.

A 4-0 OWU run over a 7-minute stretch spanning from late in the third quarter to early in the fourth quarter, plus a late scoreless stretch, spelled a narrow defeat at Don Shula Stadium for the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll lost its first game of the season, 10-9, dropping to 1-1 on the young year.

The Battling Bishops got on the board at the 9:41 mark after a quiet opening five minutes. About a minute later, John Carroll got on the board. Colin Morrissey placed a perfect high pass to Morgan Morrell, who buried a beauty immediately. After an OWU goal, Braden Zarek ripped a fantastic shot home at 5:57. Seamus Nicholson grabbed the lead off a nice Morrissey pass a couple minutes later. The Battling Bishops responded quickly with a quick pass from behind the net to right in front of the crease for a crisp goal.

With 1:43 left in the first, Braden Zarek snagged the lead for JCU with a missile of a goal. The lead stood into the second quarter, and lasted a while. Morrissey provided the lead with some staying power in the second. At the 10-minute mark, the Skaneateles, NY native fired home a low shot on the man-up, with Zarek supplying the assist.

Much of the second quarter was a defensive affair, as the defenses ruled the period. John Carroll's defense played quite well for the most part, though a late breakdown allowed Ohio Wesleyan to trim the score to 5-4 entering the second half.

In the first minute, the Battling Bishops evened the score with a deep bouncer. But JCU got the lead back a few minutes later. After JCU was called in the crease on a shot, the Blue Streaks broke up an OWU clear. On the resulting chance in transition, Nicholas Yemma set up Nicholson for the 6-5 lead. Sean Keane then got his first collegiate goal near the midway point, a critical one off a well-placed Zarek assist.

The Battling Bishops got back into it with a goal later in the third quarter, and then fired one home 90 seconds into the fourth quarter to make it a brand new ballgame at 7-7.

And OWU didn't stop there, scoring two goals within the span of a minute to fire ahead by two goals. The Battling Bishops committed a procedure penalty, however, and while JCU didn't score on the man-up, the hosts did tally a goal shortly after. Morrissey scored a beauty, working right to left, with a diving shot that found twine.

At the 7:40 mark, the Blue Streaks tied up the contest, as Keane hit a leisurely spin shot off a Morrissey pass. It was a pretty goal to tie things up.

Unfortunately the Battling Bishops scored quickly after, as a costly turnover leading to an OWU goal, which ended up being the game winner.

The OWU and JCU defenses took turns making stops down the stretch, as the offenses stalled. John Carroll got some chances in the final minutes, but could not complete some promising opportunities.

Morrissey led the Blue Streaks with 5 points (2 goals, 3 assists). Alexander Sykas topped the team with 5 groundballs and 4 caused turnovers.

The team stats were close, though JCU enjoyed an edge in clears (91% compared to 82% for OWU) and on the man-up.

The home defeat snaps a 12-game winning streak for JCU within the friendly confines of Don Shula Stadium.

John Carroll will turn around and face another strong opponent on Wednesday, heading to play Grove City in a non-conference matchup.
