Men's Lacrosse Holds off Purple Raiders in 2OT to Retain #1 Seed in OAC Tourney

ALLIANCE – The war of attrition sometimes leads to more difficult than expected road affairs in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Wednesday's regular season finale was one of those games.

John Carroll Men's Lacrosse staved off Mount Union in Alliance in a double overtime victory, 10-9, to retain a share of the OAC Regular Season Championship. And more importantly, the top seed in the upcoming OAC Tournament.

Braden Zarek proved to be the hero in the second overtime period. Following a scoreless first OT, the freshman phenom ripped one home with 2:55 on the clock in the second extra period for a big sigh of relief for JCU fans.

The start of the game, in short, belonged to the Purple Raiders. The hosts found twine five times while holding the visitors off the board completely.

A 3-0 JCU run helped to tilt the game back in favor of JCU, with Braden Zarek finding twine twice and Colin Morrissey scoring once. But the Purple Raiders scored at the one-minute mark to head into the break up, 6-3. JCU's third quarter erased the deficit and set up the thrilling finish.

Brody Forrest, Nicholas Yemma, and Zarek all took turns netting goals in the third to knot the game at six. The teams traded goals from there all the way til the end, with neither team scoring two in a row. Morrissey helped take the lead for JCU, 9-8, with 10:18 left to play, but the Raiders scored five minutes later. The remainder of regulation was scoreless for force overtime.

Zarek led the team with 6 points while Morrissey netted a hat trick. Jon Gaglio made 10 saves. Zarek and Alexander Sykas topped the team with 5 groundballs apiece.

The Blue Streaks will now have some time to rest up and get healthy, thanks to the big perk of an opening-round bye of the OAC Tournament. JCU will host the OAC Semifinal on Wednesday, May 1. No. 1 John Carroll gets the winner of No. 5 Otterbein vs. No. 4 Ohio Northern. ONU will host that OAC Quarterfinal on Saturday.
