Softball Loses Pair at Berg in Hard-Fought Contests

TIFFIN – A busy week began in earnest at Frann's Field in Tiffin.

In a midweek Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader, John Carroll dropped a pair at Heidelberg University.

The Blue Streaks lost a heartbreaker in the first game in walkoff fashion, 3-2, before losing a 5-1 contest in the second game in a battle of Mentor's own Dems sisters.

Game 1
The teams traded jabs to begin the day. John Carroll got things going quickly, as back-to-back-to-back singles by Kendall Trunzo, Elaina Rodriguez, and Kaylyn Odelli loaded the bases with no outs. Melissa Smith got one run in, but the Student Princes managed to escape there. In the bottom half of the frame, Heidelberg got it back via an unearned run.

An RBI double by Berg snagged a small lead in the fourth, but JCU quickly got it back to square in the fifth. Odelli and Rodriguez executed a perfect double steal from first and third, with Rodriguez dashing home after Odelli drew a throw from the catcher to second.

Danielle Orendi largely looked great in the opener, but in the seventh, the Student Princes got some magic going with 2 outs. A hit by pitch and walk got two runners on, and a wild pitch got the winning run to third. An RBI single provided the game-winning run.

Game 2
The second game was a sibling rivalry. Caitilin Dems took the circle for Heidelberg, while Kristin Dems got the starting nod in the circle for John Carroll.

It was the older sister who got the victory, as Caitlin's Student Princes outdueled Kristin's Blue Streaks.

Gabbie Stallbaum, the hero of the opening game, provided the opening run in the first inning with an RBI single. Berg put two more on the scoreboard in the second frame.

A Melissa Smith double scored Kendall Trunzo in the third to get John Carroll on the board. But would not be enough run support.

A pair of runs in the fourth for the hosts cemented the result, as another Stallbaum RBI concluded the scoring.

Trunzo led the bats for JCU, with a nice 3-for-4 game.

Up Next
The Blue Streaks will be back in action on Thursday, with some more OAC softball, this time at home vs. Muskingum. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3 pm.
