Volleyball Opens Campaign with a Pair of Victories

SANDUSKY, Ohio – So far so good for John Carroll Volleyball.

For the second time of the Michele Benoit era, the Blue Streaks are out to a 2-0 start, JCU tabbed a pair of victories on Friday at the Great Lakes Cross Over Tournament at the Cedar Point Sports Center.

John Carroll bested Grove City, 3-1, but set scores of 21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-18. The Blue Streaks followed up with another victory, 3-0, by set scores of 25-16, 25-17, and 25-22.

JCU vs. Grove City

The early goings of the opening set of the season were even, with an even split at 10-10. Grove City then landed some of the first punches, but the Blue Streaks responded to get back to even at 20-20 and later 21-21 thanks to kills by seniors Marissa Lynch and Kendra Dziubinski. But the Wolverines powered through down the stretch, winning the final four points to get the opener.

JCU and Grove City traded jabs, with each team tabbing runs of 4 points. The momentum seesawed but never to the point that one team took full control. Down the stretch, key kills by Haley Nicholson and nice work by Natalie Glowe helped JCU get it done late by the narrowest of margins.

The third set elapsed similarly to the first two, a narrow affair heading into the stretch run. But now, the momentum really swung in JCU's favor. A balanced attack with contributions across the board proved to be the key, with Kallan Hrics tabbing a couple important ones to do the job. With Allie Drlik providing an ace as the finisher, JCU rolled for a 25-19 win.

A killer instinct was clearly seen in the fourth set. The women of University Heights burst out to a 10-3 advantage, and fired out further to 15-5, as a pair of aces by Glowe helped greatly. The Wolverines tied to narrow the margin late, but despite a couple short runs, the Blue Streaks stayed ahead easily. An attack percentage of 0.333 ensured that.

Glowe topped the offense with 11 kills. Nicholson performed well with 4 aces and a team-best 18 assists and 7 digs. Tess Humphrey also enjoyed a nice debut with 14 assists. GG Beuselinck led the team in digs with eight in her first collegiate match.

JCU vs. Manchester

A 5-0 run by JCU defined the early goings, but Manchester bounced back with a jab of its own to tie it up at 13-all. But the Spartans soon felt cracks in the armor, as Manchester committed some costly errors to allow JCU to go on a 10-2 jaunt. More errors late led to a positive ending for JCU, 25-16 to be exact.

Long runs again dotted the second set box score. JCU got on a 6-0 roll, made possible by a trio of Glowe aces, to take control at 16-9. Manchester then tabbed four straight points, but JCU took the air out of the sails with a 5-point rally. Hailey Williams thundered down a couple kills late to ensure a clear conquest, 25-17.

Manchester roared out of the gates in the third set, seeming destined to make the stats folks unhappy with a fourth set. But JCU fired up its biggest run of the day, one of the 10-point variety, to steal a 12-9 advantage, forcing MU errors left and right. Despite all this, Manchester managed to knot the set at 22-22, but veteran Jessica Liddle got the job done late with a pair of crucial kills as part of a 3-point run to close it out.

Glowe again proved to be a critical cog of the efforts, with a team-best 7 kills, 6 digs, and 4 aces. Nicholson hit double digits in assists with 10. Olivia Mogyordy looked great in her first day in a JCU uniform, leading JCU with 11 digs vs. MU.
