Blue Streaks Split Tri-Match at SUNY Cortland

Cortland, N.Y.The John Carroll Volleyball team Traveled to Cortland, New York for a tri-match against host SUNY Cortland and Kean University. The Blue Streaks came away with a split against the stiff competition and are now 8-3 on the year. 

Abby Bednar led the Blue and Gold with 20 kills on the afternoon, while Mary Kate Sheehan had 19, including 15 against Kean. Haley Nicholson had 30 assist in the tri-match, 25 of which came against the Cougars. 

John Carroll vs SUNY Cortland (13-25, 13-25, 22-25)

The Blue Streaks went back-and-forth in the first set and were tied 5-5 following a kill by Natalie Glowe. Unfortunately for the Blue and Gold, the Red Dragon's rallied and scored the next eight points taking a 13-5 edge. 

SUNY Cortland was tough at the net, recording seven blocks in the set and edging a victory of 25-13.

In the second set, JCU started off strong by scoring the first three points, including a kill by Bednar. The Red Dragon's would put together a strong run in the middle of the set and pull away from the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll battled in the third set including a 6-0 run to give JCU a 12-10 edge forcing a Red Dragon timeout, however Cortland prevailed and earned the 3-0 sweep. 

Bednar led the Blue Streaks in the match with 10 kills, Sheehan and Kendra Dziubinski tallied four kills. Nicholson recorded 11 digs and had five assists. 

John Carroll vs Kean (27-25, 20-25, 25-10, 25-19)

It was a quick turnaround for the Blue and Gold, as the Cougars of Kean University took the court next. The first set was a true indicator of the match, as both teams were evenly matched. Late in the set, Sheehan slammed home a massive point, giving JCU a 24-21 edge. 

The Cougars would tally three straight points tying the score at 24-24. Jessica Liddle notched a kill giving JCU a 26-25 edge, then the Blue Streaks won on the set on the next point. 

In the second set, Kean was able to even the match at 1-1. The Blue Streaks went down 16-12 and traded points, but could never cut the deficit to less than four.

The third set was crucial and JCU came out on fire, starting on a 10-2 run which included a Cougar timeout. The Blue Streaks completely pulled away in the set using a 5-0 run to extend their lead to 18-6. John Carroll did a great job at the net blocking five attempts from the Cougars. 

JCU ended the afternoon on a high note by winning the fourth set 25-19. The Blue Streaks recorded four service aces in the set, as well as 16 kills.   

Next up, the Blue Streaks will travel to Granville, Ohio for a tri-match with Denison and Rose-Hulman on Saturday September 21. The first match is against the Big Red and will start at 12 p.m.
