Blue Streaks Take Back-to-Back Draws with a Scoreless Tie in Williamsport

A Chaotic Affair Sends the Blue Streaks Back to Cleveland with Another Draw on Record

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Over the weekend, Wenzler's Warriors traveled East to Pennsylvania after a three-game home stint to take on Lycoming College for a Saturday afternoon contest. After a hard-fought battle on Wednesday, the team brought a motivated squad just under five hours away from their stomping grounds.

After a successful night at Camp Graeca in DuBois on Friday, the team was ready for battle on a gorgeous day from UPMC Field.

Their opponents, the Lycoming Warriors, came ready to go as well, bringing all of the energy straight out of the gate in their warmups and charismatic bench presence. The squad, although slightly inferior from a technical standpoint, have tremendous amounts of athleticism, and stay true to a team identity that is extremely difficult to break down.

John Carroll kept a slightly similar lineup to recent games. With Cade Gergye's injury against Ohio Wesleyan and Steven Samuelson still not fully recovered from an injury sustained over the summer, first-year fullback Louis Roseberry got the nod within the Starting XI.

The opening minutes were played very much to the favor of the visitors, as the Blue Streaks created a chance and got themselves a corner within the first minute of play. Building on their momentum, John Carroll continued a high press which caught the Warriors napping on multiple occasions, wrecking some havoc and throwing Lycoming off quickly.

John Carroll were suffocating their opposition, but the Warriors were finding breathing room quickly.

Breaks for the home team began to become more and more frequent as the half progressed. When Lycoming's game plan started to click, presses were broken and John Carroll was found on the back foot a handful of times before eventually approaching with a more timid press.

The Warriors shifted the playing field slowly but surely, kickstarting their proper offensive endeavors with a shot fired off the boot of senior Joe Bamfo from an improbable angle off of the crossbar, following up an effort from Owen Magee just two minutes prior which was saved by Dominic Grobler.

As Lycoming began to maximize their attacking looks, they also settled into a low block, playing ten men behind the ball as John Carroll would cross the midfield line.

Given all of this, what was evident in the early stages was now the inverse; Lycoming dominating the force of the game while the Blue Streaks scrambled for answers. With some substitutions later in the first half, John Carroll had enough firepower to sprint to the finish line going into the half 0-0.

Clear as day, the team needed to switch things around. The coaching staff put their heads together and opted to change the formation, while the team was getting a fiery team talk from fifth-year center back Daniel Kalic.

Being the reserved, quiet player he typically is, I expected to see this kind of talk from Kalic in the same room as Bigfoot and a Cleveland Browns Super Bowl Trophy.

After words from the coaches and a few tangible adjustments, the Blue Streaks prepared for a much cleaner second half. Generally playing much better, the Blue & Gold  also brought a higher-level pacing for an impactful second half.

The pesky nature of Lycoming's play style became very apparent against the Blue Streaks; the athleticism of the team combined with their well-calculated pushes forward gave them an answer to every single thing John Carroll threw their way. John Carroll had a handful of chances, but Lycoming's came with much more menace behind them.

Things began to go south temporarily about ten minutes into the half. In the 55th minute of play, a poor clearance from the back forced a massive save once again from Dominic Grobler.

Just five minutes later, a heroic goal line clearance from Steven Samuelson kept the ball out of the net after another siege into the box from Lycoming. Less than a minute later, a shot from distance pinged off the crossbar and into the air for Grobler's taking. Another shot at the front post from Keller Chamovitz at the front post was batted away. The Warriors were rolling, and things looked bleak.

Shortly after, however, John Carroll evened the playing field, getting some great progression up the pitch but just not being able to find a proper shot through a heavily congested 18-yard box. Guilherme Wanderley, Jaden Wright, and Dylan Halm all had good looks, but weren't able to apply that finishing touch.
The last dangerous chance came in the 84th minute for Lycoming, with numbers on a counter attack the ball was laid off to Christian Woobay, who tapped the ball just wide right on the left hand side of the box crashing towards the middle.

After the final whistle, one can only gander and reflect at the chaos and carnage that just ensued. It was not the prettiest of ordeals, but the two teams split the points anyways. The consecutive draws marks the first time the team has tied two games in a row since October 2009, where they split points with Heidelberg and Ohio Northern, respectively.

The Blue Streaks will be on the road one more time out of conference this Wednesday when they take on the Spartans of Case Western Reserve University from DiSanto Field at 7:30 p.m. After that, Wenzler's Warriors will finish up their out of conference affairs back home against Calvin University on Saturday, September 28.
