Blue Streaks Fight for Five-Set Victory over Muskingum in OAC Opener

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — The John Carroll Volleyball team defeated Muskingum in an intense matchup on Saturday to open Ohio Athletic Conference play.

The Fighting Muskies put up an incredible fight against the Blue Streaks but were unable to come out on top. John Carroll beat Muskingum 3-2 after 5 well-fought sets at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

This John Carroll win marks their fourth win in a row against Muskingum since 2022.

The Blue Streaks and the Fighting Muskies battled for points in the first set. Each team took turns leading with the score. In the middle of the opening set, Muskingum took the lead, 15-13. However, the Blue Streaks quickly shut them down, scoring 7 points in a row with key blocks from Jessica Liddle, Mary Kate Sheehan, and Kendra Dziubinski taking the lead 20-16. Muskingum then got a quick four points to catch up. John Carroll did not back down with their lead however, and a fantastic block by Abby Bednar and Liddle closed out the set, 25-21.

JCU let Muskingum have an early lead 3-1 in the second set. Each team went back and forth taking the lead early on. The Fighting Muskies caught up making the score 9-8, but an easy tip from Sheehan kept the Blue Streaks in the lead. Although the Blue Streaks kept the lead, Muskingum did not make it easy and stayed close behind John Carroll's lead. With a mistake from the Blue Streaks and two kills from the Fighting Muskies, Muskingum tied up the score 18-18. Two Muskingum errors have JCU back in the lead but not for long. The Fighting Muskies took the next 3 points making the score 23-21. An error made by the Blue Streaks allowed Muskingum to tie up the score 24-24, then a kill by Bednar put them in the lead. But ultimately, Muskingum took the set, 29-27.

Headed into the third set, the Blue Streaks looked to respond. Each point flipped between Muskingum and John Carroll was close, as both teams looked evenly matched. John Carroll took the lead mid-set, making the score 12-11. John Carroll continued to hold their lead getting 6 points in a row. The Blue Streaks stayed dominant over Muskingum with a kill from Bednar. Muskingum was able to gain a couple of points after John Carroll's streak, but was unable to make a comeback due to their own mistakes and John Carroll's unmatched momentum. The Blue Streaks took the third set, 25-17.

Much like the past three sets, the fourth began with an intense battle. However, Muskingum brought a fire into the fourth set as they took the first big lead of the game, 11-5, because of multiple Blue Streak errors. Three kills by Sheehan helped the Streaks close in on Muskingum's lead. Along with Sheehan, Bednar and Natalie Glowe have been on fire with their kills on the left and right side tying up the score, 16-16. After another kill from Bednar, John Carroll finally took the lead, 19-18. Muskingum took the lead back after John Carroll mistakes, 24-21. The Fighting Muskies ended up taking the fourth set, 25-23.

Going into the fifth set, John Carroll lost 4 key points to Muskingum. The Streaks and Fighting Muskies were battling hard between points until John Caroll took the lead 9-7 with a kill by Sheehan. Muskingum continued to stay in the game, keeping the score very tight with multiple kills by their players. The Blue Streaks kept their momentum and energy high and battled through the Fighting Muskies' penetrating offense. Two impressive kills by Bednar led the Blue Streaks to winning the final set 15-13.

Bednar recorded the most kills, leading both teams with 21. Haley Nicholson also stuck out in her play today with 35 key assists. The freshman, Olivia Mogyordy, racked up an impressive 21 digs as well as 3 service aces.
