Women's Wrestling Notches Pair of Placers at Indiana Tech's Warrior Open

Sumayyah Kemp finished in fifth place to lead the Blue Streaks

FORT WAYNE – A solid sophomore season for John Carroll Women's Wrestling marched along on Saturday.

The Blue Streaks notched two placers at the Warrior Open at Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne.

Sumayyah Kemp achieved a fifth-place finish at 131 and Jordan Palmer tabbed an eighth-place effort to rep John Carroll.

Kemp started especially strong, picking up a tech fall over a foe from host Indiana Tech (12-2). The first year then tallied a late pin against a Baldwin Wallace opponent. Kemp's momentum was stopped in the quarterfinal round, as she was pinned late in the match. However, Kemp rebounded well, pinning Ariel Manning (Mount Union) in the first minute of her consolation match to move on to the fifth-place bout. Kemp concluded the day well, registering a 12-2 tech fall over Carly Cowles (Alma) to finish with a 4-1 mark for the day.

Palmer opened her day in the second round, pinning Elena Guerena (University of the Cumberlands in just under 90 seconds. But the North Canton native stumbled in the next round, with a first-minute pin in the quarterfinals. Palmer lost again by pin in the opening consolation match. Finally, in the seventh-place bout, Palmer dropped a hard-fought 4-0 decision to Adriana Cabello of host Indiana Tech.

Additionally, Bella Cyrkiel notched a win via tech fall at 145, via a 10-0 score.

John Carroll will make a trip to Westerville on Tuesday, facing off with Otterbein University in a 7 pm matchup.
